Random misgivings from a disillusioned individual

Paper and ink have come a long way since the Egyptians thousands of years ago. Started off with water mixed with plant oil written with feathers and reeds, on a piece of papyrus (as it was called)... Now, we have digitally encoded bits of information that are displayed on my screen with a cathode ray tube (or for those flatscreen/laptop users, ( Read more... )

Deep Thoughts by Josh Handey bhanfhlaith September 22 2004, 06:25:58 UTC
"Now I'm not out to offend people. But as someone who doesn't quite know what to believe, which faith to put his heart into .. this is my perspective of things. Each faith all believe that they are the right ones, and everyone else is going to hell or whatever. Some don't believe in hell and hey that's great because I wouldn't wanna be there. But everyone thinks their faith is "Airtight" to use a word someone used.
"Now listen to me here: NO religion is airtight. No religion is perfect. No religion is absolutely right. "

I consider myself a Christian, but I am not sure OTHER Christians do, and this is precisely why. I understand your concerns completely, and some of those of your pal sienna there above me. I struggle with my own faith and those are the precise reasons. When I have bonded with a Church, it was because they walked their walk; they were charitable and forgiving and supportive, not all You Suck and you must be THIS way or perish in Hell.
So let me just kind of weigh in, in summary.
[a] I think anyone who doesn't question their faith is mentally stagnant and insults themselves.
[b] I don't see how all religions can all be 100% right either. I'm real inclined to just take the Venn Diagram approach and say "Higher Power Entity" of whatever name, and some basic acts of human decency that one would be hard pressed to disagree with. Whether I eat meat on this day or read that version of this holy tome shouldn't be the deciding factor in my overall worthiness as a human being.
[c] Christians in general need to stop trying to manipulate the masses by coercion and do it more by inspiration and example. And honestly likewise to any faith, really.

What you said made a whole lot of sense to me, honestly. I think you will sort it out, in time. I still am, if it makes you feel any better, and I'm a lot older.
