He found her out back, staring at the garden fence as she sat on the ground with her knees pressed to her chest. He wondered how she could stand to be outside. It was literally freezing, and he could tell that she hadn’t cast a warming charm on herself from the way the snowflakes stuck to her hair. He hadn’t meant to upset her. He had been lonely without her, as always, and so had spoken without thinking. He trudged over to her, hoping that she was calm enough to accept his apology.
“Um…Hermione,” called out Ron.
She cast a glance back at him but didn’t say a word. He shuffled his feet nervously. Even after years of knowing her, she could still intimidate him with only her glare.
“I’m sorry,” he blurted out. “I went too far and-”
“You said what everyone else was thinking. That you hope I realize that I belong here, instead of playing house with the ferret.” She angrily got to her feet.
“That’s not true,” Ron said as she marched towards him. “It was just me, Hermione. After you left, everyone else told me that I had stepped out of line and-”
She snorted. “Please. I doubt anyone back there actually believes that. You’re simply the only one honest enough to say it to my face. Why else would your mother and your sister keep sending me invitations for one only? This is getting old, Ron.”
“I’m sorry,” he tried again.
“I am too. I’m sorry that I’ve coddled you and your family for so long. It must have only encouraged them to keep on insinuating that it would be for the best if I left my husband to be with you. I have had more than enough of this.” She lifted her chin, in that way that was uniquely hers, and his heart broke all over again as he recalled all the reasons that he loved her.
“I’m leaving now,” she told him. “I’ve already left my husband alone for far too long tonight. When you go back in there, let them know that I accepted your apology. But let them know that I’m angry with all of them, not you, for the way they’ve treated me as an outcast ever since I got together with Draco. Let them know that I won’t be accepting invitations for one any more. I’m not welcomed here unless he is welcomed here. Tell Harry and Ginny and your mum and your dad…tell all of them that if they truly care for me the slightest bit, then they will give him a chance. Good night.” And then she was gone along with all his dreams.
