Draco was searching for a Valentine’s present for his girlfriend. She had said she needed a new pensieve because she had dropped her old one. And since Pensieves are not able to be repaired with a Reparo because they are very delicate objects, he was shopping for a new one. She’s been very sad these last few weeks since Crookshanks had died and he wanted to do something about it. Of course she had tried to hide it from him but he knew she missed him a lot, missed having a familiar. She hadn’t been able to throw away his food and water bowl nor had she touched his toys. All placed in a box in the cabin under the sink, she didn’t know he knew but he did. Sometimes when she thinks he’s not looking or isn’t there, she takes out a picture of Crooks and holds it close to her heart. She doesn’t know he has caught her a few times doing it, but he has. He doesn’t think she has any idea how many times she talks about cats or mentions Crooks unknowingly. She doesn’t notice, but he does.
When he asks why she doesn’t get a new pet, she answers that he doesn’t like cats. It was no secret that he and Crookshanks were no buddies. And she’s right of course. He really doesn’t like them. They lose their hair everywhere, he finds them on his clothes, on hers, on his leather sofas, on their bed and it’s disgusting. They think dead animals are good gifts for their caretakers when in fact it scares the living hell out of him every time he finds one in front of their bedroom door. He should let Hermione leave the bedroom first, he tells himself that every time but the problem is that the dead animals scare her even more. They always leave hairballs in the most inconvenient places like in his shoes, though he suspect Crooks did that on purpose. He has always thought it because Hermione didn’t scold Crooks hard enough. He also suspects she actually thought it funny. They steal attention and affection away from his girlfriend and those who know him know how much he hated to share. It was already bad enough he had to share her with Potty and Weasel. He sighed. But though he really didn’t like Crookshanks, he also didn’t want him to die, if only because it made Hermione cry.
Without realizing it, his feet had carried him in front of ‘Magical Menagerie’ instead of the ‘Magical Objects and Other’ he was aiming for. He stopped in front of the door. Hermione had asked for a pensieve, but it wasn’t what she had wanted the most. Maybe his unconscious mind had known that and that was the reason he was here and not where he had planned to be. He was going to need a lot of courage for this. He took a deep breath and opened the door of the shop. Though he looked very certain and confident when he walked in, he really didn’t feel it. It was his first time in a shop like this and he didn’t know what to do. His eagle owl was the only animal he had ever had and that one was top bred. It even has a family tree, pure bred for a pureblood of course. Those you don’t buy in a pet store. He didn’t think they even had them.
An old man came to greet him and asked him what he was looking for. Just when he was beginning to answer his eyes fell on a pink kitten. He stopped midsentence and could do nothing else but gape, he had to remind himself that Malfoys do not gape. The shop owner followed his line of vision and immediately had a sad look on his face. An experiment gone wrong he explained and when the kitten was of no use anymore she had gotten thrown into the river. Poor thing. Almost drowned and not wanted by anyone. Not her cruel former owner nor did anyone else wanted to buy her because of her unusual coloring. They only made fun of her. It was such a pity since she certainly was a very intelligent animal. When the shop owner didn’t meet with any objections to stop talking, he continued with the other good qualities of the kitten and stated his regret that nobody had realized them. But he actually didn’t need to bother because Draco was certain the kitten had just found his perfect new owner. And he was certain she would appreciate and love her. The fact that he really didn’t like cats was ignored for the few minutes that were needed for the purchase. Love means compromise right? And this time he promised himself he was at least going to try to get along with the kitten. All females liked him and she’s female so she must like him right? At least he hoped so. It sure would make everything much more easier for him since he will need to learn to tolerate her.
