People said she was haughty, or proud. It's true that she kept to herself for the last few years, immersing herself in her work. It's true that she turned down dates, and shied away from most social functions, even when her job required it. Some said that she thought she was better than everyone else, being a war hero and all.

Nothing could be further from the truth, because despite the fact that the war had been won, that Voldemort had been defeated, the price had been high. She had lost her two best friends, and there was no way out from the pain that surrounded her daily.

All she'd wanted had been some understanding.

And she found it in the last place she'd expected. He had lost his parents, everything that had once been important to him. He had to begin again, having learned everything he had ever believed in was wrong. She knew that somehow, there was hope, when she saw her pain mirrored in his pale blue eyes.

Love the drabble. It reads like the prologue to an epic fic.

Poor Hermione. Without Harry and Ron, she really is such a lonely girl. Lovely drabble, made even better in that it ends on a hopeful note.
