“You brought me here.”
Hermione is confused. To be completely honest with herself, she often doesn’t get Draco’s precious speaking manner; she blames it on parental influences.
“I mean, I wouldn’t be here now, if it weren’t for you.”
“You mean, on your way to grab lunch? I had no idea you were that hungry.”
He looks like the impulse to kick some sense into her bushy head is growing so intense he can barely resist it longer. “Here, Granger. Can you spell milestone?”
Hermione finally gets it, and her walk gains a smug side. Normally she’d act all modestly, but in this case she knows it’s her merit too; Draco had worked hard to reach this day, the last day before they’re off Hogwarts and have to manage their own lives. But she had always been involved in his guidance, for the full length of their last year.
“Was it the war that changed us?” she suddenly asks him. They’ve been slowly and hesitantly evolving from reluctant friends to nowadays lovers; she’d been invited over for dinner at the Manor. He’d spoken with her mother on the phone - and quite a terrifying experience that was, for them both!
“I’m clueless”, he answers, stopping in the middle of the corridor. “I like you very much. Just as you are.”
Hermione smiles. Images of a future split in even halves suddenly hit her, all at once; it’s more than she can endure before lunch, so she drops her books down as carefully as she can while trying to be dramatic, and launches her hands to cup the sides of Draco’s face. They kiss, and they do it in public.
“Wait a minute…” she breathes when they’re done, though the students who stream up and done are not done with the staring. “Nice boys don’t kiss like that.”
He smirks; she’d been missing his smirk; it’s almost lost its cruelty for good. “I miss going to the movies together”, he decides then. There’s nothing that can surprise Hermione anymore, though none other than Draco Malfoy has just declared himself a fan of a Muggle pass-time.
“Fine”, she smiles. “As long as you stop at two bags of popcorn.”
Their ways part as each tries to reach his and her respective table, cutting a sinuous path through the hungry crowds. Then he yells above all the heads, “Hey Granger! I realized I forgot to kiss you goodbye… do you mind?”
