“Tell me again why she has to stay here,” he whined.

“Draco, my Aunt Esmerelda is my mums great aunt, her grandmothers’ sister, which makes her my great-grandmothers’ sister, the only living relative left on my mum’s side of the family.  My parents are off on holiday and they didn’t want her to have to spend Christmas all alone,” Hermione explained for the third time.

“Esmerelda, what kind of name is, Esmerelda.  It’s really weird.”  He stated.

Hermione arched a brow and gave him a look, replying sarcastically, “So says the fellow who’s name is Draconis Abraxas Phineus Reginald Malfoy.”

“Well, why have I never met her if she’s so close to your family; why didn‘t she come to our wedding.”

“She couldn’t attend because she was half way through a six month world cruise with her travel group.”

“The woman must be ancient by muggle standards, why is she gadding about the world at her age?”

Hermione paused with a wistful expression,  she‘d always admired her Great-Aunt Esme.  “She’s 86 years old and has always been a free spirit, she never married, she’s unconventional, different, a rebel, a trend setter.   Anyway she’s coming and that’s it.”  She stated firmly.

Aunt Esmerelda arrived in a whirl of activity and a cloud of Lavender and Rose scent reminding Hermione of childhood visits with her Aunt.  They quickly settled down for a spot of tea and a bit catching up. “Oh my goodness, everybody just behave naturally,” advised Esmerelda.  “I don’t expect you young people to alter your life to accommodate me.”

Looking curiously about the cottage that Hermione and Draco called home, she finally asked.  “Well, where are the little ones, Dear?”

Hermione was confused.  Was the old lady getting senile or what?  “Aunt Esmerelda, Draco and I have only been married a few months we don’t have any children,”   she explained gently to the old lady.

“Oh I know that Luvey,”  she’d never called her Hermione in her entire life, it had always been Luvey.  “I’m not talking about children, I’m talking about all those sweet little fur babies.”

Draco and Hermione looked at each other, eyes wide, totally at a loss what to say.

“You know, dear.  The ferrets, where are all the ferrets?”

Hermione actually snorted tea out her nose.  She’d heard people say that sort of thing happened but she’d never really believed it was possible.  Draco yelped nearly choking on his biscuit.

“Ferrets????”  Draco and Hermione gasped simultaneously.

“Well yes, Luvey,”  explained Aunt Esme patiently.  “Isn’t he the one you used to call the ferret boy?  I’m sure when I visited a few years ago I recall you referring to a boy named Draco and you called him the ferret boy.  There surely can’t be more than one boy of your acquaintance named, Draco.”

“I am sure I am the only, Draco, that Hermione knows, Aunt.”   Draco replied looking at his wife pointedly.

“Well, I assumed that you kept them as pets.  The ferrets, I mean.  Such soft, furry little creatures and they are quite clever I‘ve heard,”  she replied seriously.  “I’d love to see one.”

Hermione attempted to salvage the situation.  “I’m afraid there’s been a misunderstanding Auntie, there are no ferrets.  It was a joke, a rather mean one, in reality.   I never should have said that, I’m sorry you misinterpreted the whole thing.”

“Oh my dear boy”  Esme addressed Draco, “I certainly hope I haven’t offended you.”

“Not at all, Dear Auntie,” Draco responded graciously.

“Well, Luvey,  I think your darling husband is just perfect.”  She kindly patted the side of Draco’s cheek, concluding, “He is just what a young man aught to be.”
