“And, Mother…” Draco added hesitantly, “you might try to keep the House
Elves in hiding.”
“But who’s supposed to serve dinner, then?” I retorted, though it was already too late; my son had left the house with a poof, leaving nothing but a touch of his new perfume behind. I sniffed the air, furrowing my brow; the girl had good taste, to be quite honest. She’d picked a scent that was fitting him well.
I left the living room with a shrug, only to bump into my husband on my way to the kitchens. He had taken the habit to use his cane not only as a decorative object, and his hand propped on it was slightly trembling. It had begun back in Azkaban, but he claimed not to be worried on its account.
“So”, he muttered, “he’s bringing the Mudblood for dinner.”
“Now, Lucius, don’t be absurd. He is just what a young man ought to be: in love.” I stroked his arm sympathetically, and rushed to give the House Elves their orders.
Later that night my impatience was beginning to show as I waited for them to call at the front door. I was wearing a light gown with nothing pretentious as jewelry, knowing the girl would come straight from the summer camp where she was working as a volunteer, and not wishing to impose on her our dinner etiquette; not for starters.
“Oh, my goodness”, I breathed when the doorbell finally shook me out of my melancholy; “they’re here. Everybody behave naturally”, I instructed the House Elves, though I could not see them. I’ve cast an invisibility spell on them beforehand, so that they still could serve dishes and drinks without being noticed; as long as they didn’t talk, chuckle, or trip, anyway.
Draco and Hermione slid past the door at the same time and pace, hand in hand. I stiffened a smile; they looked awkward, but they were trying; it wasn’t just the new environment, it was something lingering between the two of them as well. She had come reluctantly, it was easy to guess, and he was still dabbling in showing her proof of his affection. Knowing my boy I could tell from the very beginning that he cared for Hermione a great deal, but he was impaired to show it.
“Bah”, Lucius poofed in my ear as we were following the pair in the dining room, and I was alert for the presence of House Elves, lest I accidentally bumped into one. “I don’t remember us having been so lovey-dovey.”
“Oh hush! Not all of us can afford to be romantic. I’ve been offered a comfortable home and protection. There’s a lot to be thankful for.”
He stopped and considered me carefully for a few moments, and then he turned his head in their direction again. Draco was holding Hermione’s chair so that she could sit; she mouthed a word of thanks, and both my husband and eye could easily read in her eyes the same state of being overwhelmed by her feelings.
“There’s more than respect”, Lucius said quietly, then swept my arm under the crook of his elbow, and together we marched in, bracing ourselves for most probable engagement announcements.
