Title: Sigh
Author: angelps_7
Rating: PG
Word Count: 609
Notes/Warning: Written for the "I Want the Fairytale" challenge Day 3, Gone with the Wind. Used: "I'm very drunk and I intend on getting still drunker before this evening's over." and "You're coarse, and you're conceited. And I think this conversation has gone far enough." Also, this was way better in my head than when it came onto paper... oh well! I'll come back to it someday and make it better. What an amazing movie though!!
"Draco?" Hermione opened the door wider to allow her soaked, disgruntled roommate inside. She quickly grabbed a few towels and brought him a steaming cup of tea.
Hermione sat beside him, peering closely at him. Something was off about him. He smelled slightly of rain, but mostly of firewhiskey.
"To save you the trouble of asking, yes, I'm very drunk and I intend on getting still drunker before this evening's over." He accepted the tea, and accio'd some more firewhisky to add into it.
Hermione wrinkled her nose and opened her mouth to speak, but Draco beat her to it.
"How was your date tonight?"
"I didn't go."
He turned to her.
"Go ahead, laugh all you want."
He shook his head. "Not in the mood. Why not?"
"I wasn't as eager," she said vaguely.
"You'd rather spend your Friday night holed up in here?"
"It's also pouring rain outside."
"I don't think that's the reason."
She raised a brow.
"Is there someone else?"
"For a guy who seems so drunk, you ask very coherent questions."
"I'm not an idiot, Granger. We Malfoys have a high tolerance for alcohol. And perfect cheekbones. But that's besides the point, and you're avoiding the question. You've got your eye on someone else. Tell me."
"Shut up, ferret," she retorted childishly.
"No, I won't, bookworm. You've finally got in for another guy... and judging by the fact that you're sitting here taking care of my drunk arse, I'd say he's out of your league, like most other guys are."
She resisted the urge to slap him. "No, I'm home because I wanted to stay home."
"Unless... it's me!"
She held his gaze evenly. "Don't be silly."
"Who else could it be, bookworm?"
He scooted closer to her on the couch, his shoulder - still wet - touching hers, his fingers just barely grazing her arm. "Tell me you don't feel something. Tell me you're lying."
She wanted to say something, to say anything, but her throat had gone dry and her cheeks flamed. She shivered slightly.
"You do like me!" he exclaimed, standing up.
Hermione quickly crossed her arms but didn't respond.
"Come on, I want to hear you say it."
"You want to hear me say it? I'll say this: You're coarse, and you're conceited. And I think this conversation has gone far enough." She stood up to leave, but the sound of a sigh stopped her still.
In all the time she'd known him, Draco had never sighed before. She slowly turned.
His eyes remained fixed on his clasped hands, and his elbows rested on his thighs as he leaned slightly forward in his seat. "Why are you so stubborn?"
"Me? You're the one who's constantly insulting me."
"You're a smart girl, Hermione. You don't realize it's my way of showing I like you?"
"You've got a twisted courting system then, Draco."
"It's only reserved for you."
"Don't I feel lucky."
"I never know how to handle myself around you," he said honestly. He had a look on his face akin to giving up, and Hermione assumed the firewhiskey had also helped bring out his earnest side, though she wasn't complaining.
She smiled slightly. "If you weren't always such a prat, we could work this out."
Draco leaned back, seemingly satisfied with that answer for now.
"I said could. As in maybe."
"Maybe is good enough for me."
He kissed her quickly and headed for his bedroom, leaving a blushing and confused Hermione behind.
Note: Okay, so also it's late at night and I just got stumped. It didn't quite come out as the ending I wanted, although it was along the lines of it. Hope it was to your liking though! =)
