True Love

Part Four
Year: 2018

“Magnolia Hunter, you get you’re hind end down here this instant,” Nadine yelled up from the living room.

“What’s wrong Momma?” she asked as she ran into the room.

“Turn around and tell me what you think is wrong,” she ordered.

Maggie turned and screamed. “What’s he doing here?”

“Magnolia,” Nadine warned.

“Jack has black eye, so what’s the big deal?”

“The big deal is, you gave it to him, now I want you to apologize.”

“No way, he deserved it.”

“I did not,” Jack yelled back.

“He called me stupid,” Maggie explained to Nadine.

“I did not call you stupid. I said that you were intellectually challenged.”

Maxie gave her an apologetic look before turning to her son. “Jackson Spinelli, what has your father told you about fighting with girls?”

“Not to,” he replied, bowing his head. “But you and Dad fight all the time, you even throw things at him.”

“When have I ever thrown anything at your father?” Maxie asked.

Nadine waited intently for his answer. Maggie was always telling Maxie embarrassing things on her and Matt, so now it was time for her to learn something embarrassing on her two best friends. That was the best and worst part about having children, they NEVER censored themselves.

“You threw a dart at Dad yesterday.”

“You did what?” Nadine asked with shock.

Maxie pulled Nadine to the side, so the children wouldn’t here. “It was a Nerf dart, and it so didn’t hurt him.”

Nadine gave her a look. “You still shouldn’t throw things at your husband.”

“Oh please Nadine, you can get off your high horse. At least I’ve never taken a knife to Spinelli and threatened to, how was it you phrased it? Oh I remember now, ‘change him from a rooster to a hen,’” Maxie replied with a smirk.

“Well I didn’t do it, now did I? Besides he was acting like…”

“An asshole,” Maxie whispered. “That shouldn’t come as a surprise to you Nadine. You knew that about him before you married him.”

Nadine didn’t really have an excuse for her actions that day, besides jealousy. She had overheard the other nurses talking about Matt flirting with the new nurse on their shift. She was pissed and decided to confront him about it when she got home. Of course he acted like it wasn’t a big deal and she lost it, picked up the knife that was lying on the kitchen counter and threatened him. God, she wished she had a camera for the look on his face, it was better than when he found her in his room at Mac’s. The problem was she had forgotten that she had invited Maxie and Spinelli over for dinner and Maxie never let her or Matt live that scene down.

“And you knew that Spinelli was never going to completely stop working for Jason before you married him,” she whispered back.

“That was a low blow Nadine.”

Nadine knew that that had been the main issue for the problems in Maxie and Spinelli’s marriage from the very beginning and she felt bad for brining it up. He wasn’t in immediate danger, but he would still try to prove himself to Jason, which pissed Maxie off to no end.

“You’re right Maxie, I’m sorry,” she apologized, giving her friend a hug.

“You give that back to me you little runt,” Maggie yelled.

“I swear, you can’t leave these two alone for two seconds without them getting into it,” Nadine said, running over to pull her daughter off of the young boy. “Maggie if you don’t tell Jack you’re sorry, then you’ll be put in time-out.”

“But Mom, I’m eight years old, too old for time-out,” she whined.

“You’re not too old for me to wear your butt out good. Now apologize,” she ordered.

“Nadine, keep those little rug rats quiet,” Matt yelled from the other room.

“You married him,” Maxie said, holding her son back.

Nadine rolled her eyes. “Do you want your father to come in here?”

“Fine, I’m sorry Jack,” she pouted.

“Jackson, don’t you have something to say?” Maxie asked, giving him a stern look.

“I’m sorry Maggie,” he replied.

“Good, now why don’t the two of you hug and make up?” Maxie asked with a smile.

“Aww, Mom,” he whined.

“Do it.”

Nadine and Maxie smiled as their children gave each other a hug.

“Mom, can I show Jack the new game Daddy bought me?”

“As long as the two of you don’t get into another fight,” Nadine replied.

“We won’t,” they both yelled as they ran upstairs.

“Those two are so going to wind up married someday,” Maxie stated with a grin.

“They won’t if Matt has anything to say about it. He and Spinelli may be friends, but I don’t think he could handle his little girl marrying his son,” Nadine replied as she led Maxie into the other room.

“Oh he’ll get over it. Couldn’t you just imagine how cute Maggie and Jack would look on their wedding day?”

“Maxie they're eight years old, we’ve got a while yet before we need to start planning their wedding.”

“Nadine, it’s never too early to start.”

Nadine just smiled as they walked into the family room.

“Ha, I told you, you were not a challenge for the Jackal.”

“Shut up. We’re playing again.”

“Face it Dr. Doom, I’m better with a light saber than you.”

“I will not face it and you’re not going to win again.”

Nadine and Maxie just looked at each other.

“Nadine we really need to have a spa day. We can leave the children with the children,” Maxie stated, looking over at the two grown men with their wii light sabers.

Nadine laughed as they walked over to stand in front of the tv.

“Move,” both men yelled at once.

“No,” Maxie replied.

“The two you left us in the other room to referee the kids,” Nadine stated with her hands on her hips.

“That’s your job, now move,” Matt replied, trying to get a look at the television.

“Damian Spinelli, you had best not agree with him,” Maxie warned.

“I didn’t say anything,” he replied, holding his hands up.

“It doesn’t matter. Maxie and I were trying to settle the fight…”

“There wouldn’t have been a fight to begin with, if his son hadn’t called my little girl stupid,” Matt stated, pointing his controller at Spinelli.

“He didn’t say she was stupid, he said that she was…”

“He called her stupid Spinelli,” Maxie snapped.

“Well his ‘little’ girl had no right giving my boy a black eye,” Spinelli countered.

“She had every right.”

“Shut up, both of you,” Nadine yelled, yanking the game controller out of her husband’s hands.

“Nadine,” he warned.

Nadine shivered slightly at his warning. She knew he was all talk and for some reason, that’s what always turned her on when they had an argument. Smiling, she turned around and turned the game off. “Play time is over boys. I think it’s time for Maxie to take Spinelli home, don’t you Maxie?” she asked, hoping her friend would catch the hint.

“Yup, I think it’s time to go,” Maxie replied, giving Nadine a wink as she pulled her husband out of the room.

Nadine followed them out of the room and stopped Maxie at the door. “Maxie, do you care to take Maggie with you for a couple of hours?” she whispered with a pleading look.

“Nadine,” Maxie replied through her teeth.

“Please Maxie,” she replied.

“Fine, as long as you let Jack spend the night tonight.”

“What? I’m only asking for a couple of hours and you’re asking for a whole night?”

“Take it or leave it Nadine.”

“You’re a bitch, you know that?”

Maxie smiled as the kids came running down the stairs with Spinelli on their heels. “Maggie, how would you like to go grab some lunch at Kelly’s with us?”

“Maximista, have you lost your mind?” Spinelli asked in shock, staring at the already fighting kids.

“She’s perfectly sane Spinelli. Here’s some money and Maggie, you be good for Maxie and Spinelli,” Nadine said as she gave her daughter a hug.

“Alright,” Maggie said, giving her a kiss before running to her father.

Nadine smiled as Matt picked their daughter up, spinning her around in the air. “Have fun Princess. Now give Daddy some sugar,” he said, offering his cheek to her.

“I love you Daddy,” she giggled as she gave him a big sloppy kiss.

Nadine gave her husband a knowing a look as he let Maggie down to the ground. She ran past Nadine into Spinelli’s arms.

“You ready to go, Sweet Magnolia?” he asked.

“Yup.” Maggie jumped out of Spinelli’s arms and ran out to the car with Jack.

“Don’t forget,” Maxie told her as she pulled Spinelli out the door.

Nadine turned towards her husband.

“Nadine, you know I don’t like her hanging around Spinelli’s kid,” Matt said as she approached him.

“So you say, but I know you don’t hate Spinelli as much as you’d like me to think. Besides, it gives us some alone time,” she replied as she started to unbutton his shirt.

Nadine pulled him down for a kiss, but stopped short at the sound of his pager going off.

“Damn it, I have to take this,” he said, looking at the screen.

She pulled back as he began to button up his shirt. He grabbed his keys off the table beside the door. “I’ll be back as soon as I can,” he whispered, pulling her into a passionate kiss before walking out the door.

Nadine ran upstairs after she watched her husband drive off. She had to find something hot and sexy to wear. She was going to give her husband a surprise when he got home.
