Chapter Seven
“The Unhinged One will rue the day he messed with the Jackal.”
Spinelli? Maxie opened her eyes to see a hazy Spinelli beating on the wall. She tried to get his attention, but she had something in her mouth. Maybe I can walk. But when she tried to move away from the opposite wall, she realized that her hands were chained to the wall. She fell back against the wall, causing the chains to clank.
He turned toward her, picking up a piece of wood from the floor.
It’s me you idiot. She held her breath as he approached cautiously. What’s wrong with him? She looked around her and realized he couldn’t see her for the darkness surrounding her.
“Who’s there?” he called, holding the piece of wood close to him.
Maxie rolled her eyes. He’ll never see Lulu again if he hits me with that. She moaned loudly.
The moonlight, shinning through the small window, showed enough of his face, for her to see the confusion in his eyes. He placed the wood on a box beside him as he approached her.
“Maxie?” he asked hesitantly.
She nodded her head. Thank god. He reached toward her face and removed the old piece of cloth from her mouth.
“Spin,” she said with a sigh of relief.
“Are you injured?” he asked, his hands moving from her face to one of her hands.
Maxie’s heart leaped at the concern look in his eyes. “I don’t think so, just please get me out of here,” she pleaded. She watched as he fumbled around with the shackle on her wrist.
“The Jackal isn’t sure he can,” he mumbled while examining the lock.
“I know you can.” Maxie smiled at him when he looked up at her. She knew she was acting like such a girl, but there was nothing she could do. She was literally chained to a wall, completely at his mercy.
Apparently she gave him the confidence he needed, because he started looking around for a way to get her out of the chains. “Here,” he said, coming toward her with an ax.
“Spinelli, have you lost your mind?” she screamed as he raised the ax above his head.
“Just be still,” he ordered.
“No!” Maxie began struggling against the chains.
“Do you have a better idea?” he asked, setting the ax on the floor.
“Yes! Why don’t you pick the damn lock, instead of using me as target practice,” she snapped.
“How do you expect the Jackal to do that? Huh? It’s not like I walk around with objects small enough to pick a lock,” Spinelli replied, throwing his hands up.
Maxie rolled her eyes and leaned back against the wall. She almost laughed at the irony of the situation. The chains that held her to the wall were like the chains that held her to him. Why couldn’t she have that locked picked? It was then she realized it had, he had picked the lock to her heart long ago. I’m in love with him. “Oh my god,” she whispered.
“What?” he asked, rushing back to her side.
“Uh…” Think of something Maxie. “Why don’t you use one of my hair pins?” she suggested.
“That would work. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. The Bad Blonde One should use her intelligence more often,” he said, moving his hands into her hair.
The small compliment he gave her, trumped his insulting nickname. She gasped when he long fingers grazed her scalp.
“What?” he asked, pulling back to look at her.
“My head is just a little tender,” she lied.
“The Jackal shall continue with caution,” he replied, fingers gently moving through her hair.
“That’s not helping,” she said aloud with frustration.
He pulled away from her completely. “Maxie what do you want me to do? I can’t magically remove the locks.”
Yes you can. “There’s a pin inside the twist,” she stated, bowing her head.
“Ahh,” he replied, pulling the pin out of the simple twist. “See how easy it is when you cooperate,” he replied with a smirk as he went to work on the locks.
“Yes, yes, I know. Just hurry up,” she ordered. Within minutes, he had her left hand free and began working on her right. Maxie collapsed in his arms after he released her.
Spinelli walked her over to the small couch beneath the window. “Are you sure the Demented Denizen of Darkness didn’t harm you in any other way?” he asked, his eyes moving to her legs.
She followed his gaze. “That old bastard ruined my dress.” Maxie began to examine the tear when his hands covered hers. Her eye’s met his. “What?”
“Did he…” he stammered.
“Did he what?” she snapped. Since when did he have problems talking to her?
“Damn it Maxie, did he force himself on you?”
Maxie was stunned. When did he start cussing? “Of course he forced himself on me; he grabbed me and placed me into this hell hole.”
Spinelli rubbed his face. “That’s not what the Jackal means.”
Confused, Maxie looked back down her torn gown. What on earth is he talking about? Oh my God. Her eyes met his with realization. “No, he didn’t rape me.”
“Are you…”
“Spinelli, I think I would know if he had,” she interrupted.
“Good,” he stated simply as he began to pace.
Maxie studied him from her place on the couch. “How did you wind up in here?”
“Fair Lulu disappeared after the electricity went out…”
“Let me guess, you figured it was your duty to look for her,” she replied, looking down at her hands. She couldn’t help but feel hurt that he didn’t feel the need to look for her.
He continued. “The Jackal heard a scream…”
“You thought I was Lulu,” she finished.
“No, I knew it was you,” he stated.
“You did?” she asked with shock.
He nodded. “By the time the Jackal reached the hall you were in, you were gone. Two of the Unhinged One’s minions grabbed me and held me until he returned. He ordered them to bring me here,” Spinelli finished. He looked around the small space. “The Jackal wonders why the Princely One would have a secret room.”
Maxie smiled at his attempted at changing the subject. “Well, I seriously doubt it was Nikolas’ doing. This room smells of Helena if you ask me.”
“Helena?” he asked curiously, coming to sit beside her on the couch.
“Oh, you’ve never met Helena have you? Well you had best count yourself lucky. She’s Nikolas’ grandmother. That bitch is crazier than Johnny Zacchara’s father. Actually, those two would make a great couple,” she laughed.
He smiled.
“You know, you’re actually kind of cool when you’re not throwing me to the floor. That was really rude.” Maxie turned to face him, pulling her legs up under her.
“The Bad Blonde One knows exactly why I did that.”
“I don’t know what you mean,” she replied innocently.
“The dumb blonde act doesn’t suit you,” he replied.
“Well…” she moved closer to him, leaning across his lap. “I guess you’re on to me then, aren’t you?” Maxie pushed his jacket off his shoulders.
“The Jackals has been on to you for a while.” Spinelli helped her remove his jacket.
“Has he?” she murmured, removing his tie. She unbuttoned the top few buttons of his white dress shirt. Her hands fluttered down the front of his shirt to his waist. She deliberately grazed his hardness with her knuckles as she pulled his shirt free of his pants.
“Maxie,” he warned in a seductive voice.
“I’m just trying to make you comfortable,” she smiled up at him. Her small hand moved back to the front of his pants.
His hand covered hers. “Do I have to chain the Saucy One back to the wall?” he asked with a smirk.
Maxie’s eyes twinkled with mischief. “Aww, my Kinky D wants to come out and play,” she replied, moving closer to him.
His hand moved to her face, caressing it gently. “He bruised your delicate skin,” he commented, studying her face.
“You know, if I was any other woman, I might think you’re falling for me,” she smiled, caressing the side of his face.
“I might be, if you were any other woman that is.” Spinelli smiled down at her, before his lips met hers.
Maxie shivered as she gave in to the sweet kiss, cradling his cheek in one hand, sliding her other around his waist. She felt safe and cherished, as he cradled her against his chest. She pulled back from his kiss.
“I’m only going to say this once, so you’d better listen,” she started, running her fingers through his hair. “Thank you for answering my cry for help. You are truly my knight in shinning armor. Therefore, Sir Damian, I am in debt to you.”
Spinelli smiled. “Then perhaps Lady Maxie can repay her knight with another kiss.”
Maxie’s stomach tightened, as she pulled him into a deep kiss.
