No I dive pretty well but was saving these for vacation reading, I've just heard so much hype surrounding these stories but couldn't get a straight answer.

Part of your post puzzles me. I agree, don't ever attack authors, even plagiarists. It's enough to condemn their actions loudly and clearly, and Cassie Clare's initial plagiarism and the lies and evasions she indulged in when caught certainly deserve condemnation. I also don't see the "some people liked it" argument's relevance when we're talking about a plagiarized fic. Sure, people liked what they were reading: significant portions of it had originally been composed by popular authors of books and highly regarded writers of television scripts, so what's not to like? But, the fact that people liked it cannot be used to defend its merits as a fic, they way the fact that "some people liked it" is a valid argument for the merits of an original, that is not-plagiarized, fic. So, why bring it up?

That said, totally agree that there are tons of other works we can help the OP find.

Sure a lot of people flat out adored the fic. Hence it's cult status. So what? IT IS PLAGIARIARIZED.

I have never, ever, in any other fandom, encountered a situation where known acts of plagiarism are not greeted with the response that they should simply be removed, taken down, roundly condemned and certainly not recommended.

I'm sorry if I've offended you. It did seem to me, when I read your posts, that you were taking the view that the OP should base her decision on whether or not to read the story solely on its entertainment value. It seemed like the moral considerations involved were just not an issue, or were less important than whether or not other readers had enjoyed the story in question.

And, that just pushed all kinds of buttons for me, as may have been evident by my responses. I've been part of online fandom for about twelve years. In that time, a number of my friends have been put through hell by plagiarists stealing their hard work. One and all have told me they've felt intensely violated by the experiences.

So, apologies for taking your posts the wrong way.

You're very generous to say so. Thanks.

I have a problem with the plagiarism, obvs, but I remember back in the day when I first read it - I was new to HP fandom and wanted to read about Draco and Hermione. DT was one of the earliest stories recommended to me, and I thought it was decent. It made me laugh sometimes, but mostly it was a bit too slow and melodramatic to justify its enormous length (imho).

That's when I found out that most people LOVED it. It was pretty much the most popular fanfiction story ever, and it felt like I'd entered some kind of sideways universe where northwest was north and average was the best you could be.

I hope this comment doesn't sound mean or ranty, but this particular mediocre story has plagued the fandom for years like some kind of tired, half-assed ghost. Now that I know it's plagiarized AND not very good AND not D/Hr at all, I hope no dramione fans ever accidentally read it expecting anything more than that.

Agreed! I have nothing against Cassandra Claire except that I don't approve of plagiarism, but this story... oh, I just can't stand this darn story, and I hope it's okay to say that now that she's left the fandom and taken it down. There are tons of really popular authors that are well-known because they're good--for example, I think people will continue to rec "We Learned the Sea" on every rec post until Livejournal explodes, and it's not one bit annoying because it's warranted--but a glorified amalgamation of stolen prose and Buffy quotes that has hundreds of rabid fans? Gets frustrating.
