GOD how I despise it when people whine.
I would like to say that flames are welcome, nay, encouraged.
As we are all well aware, when FF.Net came up from their one day absence, they had a new policy: All NC-17 fics were going to be taken down due to complaints.
You are all, of course, outraged. But understand this: its not necessarily the readers or visitors of the site that are doing the complaining. It is most likely the parents of these visitors. The only thing between underaged visitors and the NC-17 fic is a pop up that you click to verify that you are over 17. It is very easy to do this no matter what your age, right?
Look at it this way from a practical point of view: Xing and the administrators are keeping their responsibilities as good admins. There's plenty other things on fanfiction. There are four other rating categories.
And take it from a parental view. Would you want your kid reading something like this? As a kid yourself (some of you much younger than myself), it will be easy to say, "Yeah, sure, what can it hurt?". I'm going to take this out with a story. If you don't want to read that part, just skip down to the "Why?" in bold face.
I have a dear friend from the Harry Potter fandom. He writes a couple fics friendly for younger people, but he has also written an NC-17 smut fic (which mostly started out as an inside joke). He makes anyone who wants to read it send him his age as well. He was very wary to send it to me, even though he didn't think I was sixteen until I told him so. I said not to worry about it, and he sent it to me.
I continue to tease him affectionately about going into "Daddy" mode on me at times, because he does, and everyone else in our polygon of friends, especially when it comes to this NC-17 fic. Why? Not only is he that good of a friend to us, he has a daughter that has just turned thirteen (I believe), and he says he would not want anyone sending his daughter a story of that kind of content.
So, before you go into "woe is me" Drama Queen mode and worry about reading mindless smut, think of the practical sides to this. Don't worry about finding smut, there's more on the internet than you will ever know about.
The administrators at fanfiction.net would not do this if they didn't have a good reason. I'm looking at it from an admin's view, because I have admin responsibilities on my shoulders, and I know how it feels, to have to control what your visitors see and read and keep it appropriate for people of all ages. I think that this was a very progressive decision on the staff's part, and if you are not old enough to see that, perhaps you should not be reading NC-17 fiction, either.
