Feminism/Sexism Rant, Ahoy

So, I finished my MA essay draft about five minutes ago. It is therefore a perfect time for me to write some more! ... ... Oh my life.

Anyway, this is fun in my brain writing, not academic writing and that makes all the difference in the world.

Important piece of info so I only sound slightly crazy, not psychologically disturbed: I RP Kara " ( Read more... )

It has no pockets. Where are you supposed to keep your pencil and notebook and cigars and lighter and gum and first aid kit and stuff?
:cracks up, as that has Kara written all over it:

If they're touting this movie over an all female lead cast... that's just silly. But this movie is being made like a comic book movie, simply with no comic book source material. In fact, it smacks of live action anime, to me, to the point where I'm not even entirely sure how much actual plot is involved so much as there's likely to be a framework of vague plot like items tying one fanciful fight sequence to the next. The preview for the movie seems like labeling it as the 50s is a convenient excuse for vague post-WW2 type steampunkish imagery which is even only applicable for one or two of the leads. It really actually scanned to me as popcorn action with hot chicks. Me? As long as they're (the creators, not WB, who is a bunch of PR douchebags anyway) not attempting to make claim to more than that, I'm pretty ok with that. Part of it is being bi, and I like watching scantily clad chicks kick ass as much as the next red blooded lesbian/heterosexual male. Part of it is I'm willing to see how the whole movie actually plays out before I make a call, because sometimes a fantasy is just a fantasy, and that's ok (because being the dominant perspective doesn't mean it's an invalid perspective), and sometimes a fantasy needs a kick in the balls (because the dominant perspective forgets to be respectful), y'know?

As for the statuette, having worked in a comic shop I can guarantee you that the description was only there to make it sound cool. If anything "authentic" meant "authentic to the movie" not to any time period or practicality.

It's the fact that the dominant perspective is SO dominant. You'd never see a guy fantasy that involved being that scantily clad.

(I'm bi, too. I have no problem with scantily clad women, in the right situations. I'm tired of being inundated with it)

Actually he'd done an awful lot of that with 300...

Fair enough, but, again, that's one movie.

One movie... but by the same guy. (And it should be noted in 300, despite her awesome cleavage, the lead female was more clothed than any of the male leads.) He'd also done Watchmen (which had the issues on purpose as social statements), and Legend of the Guardians (which to all accounts seems to be a solid coming-of-age family movie of high adventure). The problem with the prevalence of the dominant position is it's easy and dangerous to start assuming anyone that expresses the dominant position even once is consumed by it. And maybe he is... but I think he deserves a shot.

He's welcome to his chance, but I have doubts.

"On the other hand, though it's fetishistic and personal, I like to think that my fetishes aren't that obscure."

Anyway, I guess my point is, it feels like one more woman exploitation flick and I won't be seeing it unless something drastic happens to convince me otherwise.
