Jack and Ianto stood at the top of the dock, whispering and laughing to each other. Owen, Gwen and Tosh were closer to the edge, looking into the water. Gwen seemed to be the only one to notice the other two at the other end of the dock. Although she wondered exactly what it was that they were discussing, she figured it was best to assume they were talking about their sex life and other such things that Gwen was better off not knowing because all she could make out was “wouldn’t it be funny if..”
“Go ahead,” Jack laughed. “I dare you.”
Ianto smiled back and nodded.
Gwen could hear Jack’s words, as he didn’t even attempt them in a whisper. She looked over at them, catching Jack’s eye and giving him a look. He returned it with a smile that only sent her mind reeling as to what they could have been planning. When she saw Ianto begin the short walk towards her, Owen, and Tosh, she guessed it would only be a matter of time before it was revealed.
“Tosh, Gwen,” Ianto began, “Jack wants a word.”
Gwen’s eyes went wide with confusion and a bit of curiosity as she nodded and headed towards Jack, Tosh right behind her. “What is it?” she asked when they reached him.
“Just watch,” he replied quietly, nodding towards Owen and Ianto at the other end.
Owen and Ianto were standing at opposite sides of the end of the dock, both of them absentmindedly glancing into the water.
Ianto made a noise of surprise, causing the medical doctor to look over at him. “Hey Owen,” he said. “Come have a look at this.”
“What is it?”
“Dunno,” he replied as Owen walked across.
“Where?”
Ianto pointed a few feet away. “Right there.”
Owen squinted his eyes and leaned forward. “I don’t see anything, Ianto. Probably just a fish or something.” He began to walk back to where he’d been standing before.
Ianto knelt down on the dock. “There it goes!” he cried excitedly.
Owen glanced back. “What? It didn’t even splash. There’s nothing…”
“No, no,” Ianto pointed towards the water, a little closer. “I can see. It’s like a little blue thing.”
Owen sighed, but he obliged Ianto’s wishes. “I think the sea breeze is mixing funny with those coffee chemicals you consume all day at the Hub.” He crouched next to Ianto and leaned over the dock, resting his right hand on the wood. “I don’t see…” But Owen didn’t finish his sentence. He was leaning over a little too far, trying to see whatever it was that Ianto claimed was swimming in the bay.
Ianto couldn’t bear to hold in his laughter as he watched his co-worker tumble into the water in search of a make believe object.
“Bloody hell, Ianto,” Owen cried as he flailed around in the cold water.
Gwen, Tosh, and Jack joined Ianto at the edge of the dock, laughing hysterically as they watched a very angry Owen climb out.
“You owe me, Sir,” Ianto said, standing up.
“You’ll get your pay, don’t worry,” Jack replied, winking at the tea boy.
“All right there, Owen?” Gwen said between bouts of giggles as the disgruntled doctor settled himself back on the dry ground.
He just shook his head at her and began wringing out his t-shirt. Turning to Ianto, he said, “I still didn’t see that fish or whatever it was that you were talking about. There’s nothing in there.”
The team only laughed harder.
