Let there be sound...

Mum had her new hearing aid set up today and it seems that she can actually hear better now.  Wow, such a long time coming.

I find now that when she talks, she is talking fairly quietly.  I guess that is because she can hear herself better now or something like that?
It made me wonder at first if it was working well but it seems to be as she can most of the time hear me when I talk normally.

I told her before the fitting that if anything wasn't to her liking or didn't sound right, then she absolutely must tell the technician.  She has a bad habit of being all enthusiastic and happy about new stuff, but a day or two later she stops using the new thing.  She can't do that this time, so I hope she was truthful and that it is actually calibrated correctly etc.

The technician said that it could take up to a couple of weeks for her brain to get used to processing sound "normally" again.  I think it might take her less time than that but we'll see.

Currently she is sleeping and has been since not long after we got home.  She was actually sleeping on the drive to the audiologist and back again.  She has codeine tablets to take for her arthritis pain and it seems to have zonked her out.  It also appears that she has picked up my head cold, poor thing.  She complained of a bad headache when I came home to pick her up and she has a runny nose.  The doctor has prescribed some antibiotics as she heard a small chest sound and is concerned about it becoming worse.  I will pick up her prescription tomorrow.

The next test will be listening to the tv.  She might not need to use her headphones anymore, will trial it when she wakes up.

Now that she is back in the land of the hearing, I have to be careful about muttering curses at her when she annoys me.  She never used to be able to hear me and I could rant at will, but it could be different now.
