Gearing Up For Fringe

Jun 02, 2009 10:45

Ottawa Fringe 2009 begins in a little over two weeks. Expect play-related entries to dominate this space for the rest of the month.

Last night we did a walk through of the entire show. A walk through involves running lines, while walking through the general blocking of each scene. It's a way to practice lines, while getting an approximate run time on the show.

Our previous walk-through came in at 85 minutes. Fringe rule binds us to a strict 60 minute maximum run. Problematic! A flurry of red pen scratching ensued and I managed to shave about five pages off the script. Last night's walk-through was clocked at 64 minutes. Better. The red pen was out again this morning. I'm hopeful that tighter pacing, combined with a few more strategic cuts will get us under the one-hour mark.

If I'm rehearsing with people I like, I invariably develop what I call a "production crush". I am hard-core anamored with my cast and crew. I want to hang out with them as much as possible. Rehearsal is the high point of my day. I look for opportunities to socialize beyond work. I talk about these people any chance I get, which I'm sure gets boring for poor Drama King. It's nice...but also a little sad. It's not that friendships forged on stage don't last. But they change. It's like the friends you make at summer camp. They always hold a special place in your heart. But the experience you share is fleeting and whether you stay friends, or drift apart it's never the same.

Time to do laundry and learn some lines!
