Today was filled with so many interesting and wonderful experiences. First off was the intense anticipation I experienced while waiting to find out if I made it to call backs. They posted the list for "The White Plague" first( which I didn't make). Then I had to wait until after theater foundations and USEM to go back and check for the other call back list. I scanned the list for "The Philadelphia Story" and didn't see my name at first, then finally under ensemble, I SAW MY NAME. As I put it to someone standing next to me, "This is one of the prettiest sights I've seen in a while."
I was so giddy that I could hardly concentrate in Spanish. Eventually I brought my head back from the clouds and started to help my partner. Late in the class, we decided to start a study group because she kind of wanted me to tutor her. A lot of people wanted to join us too. It'll really help all of us.
I went to dinner really early so I could go right to call backs after the mandatory drama major meeting. Unfortunately, my roomate left earlier than I thought she would. Result: I was locked out. I already was running sort of late and then in addition I had to run upstairs to my RA's room. I woke him up, and got him to get the keys to onlock my room. This guy talks and moves really slow, so when I told him that I was in a hurry, that pretty much only brought his speed up to that of an average person's saunter. Once I get all my stuff, I sprint/speed walk across the whole campus with this huge back pack on my back. I make it there in record time and manage to be only one minute late. A guy had already started talking so I did this amazing sneaky-dash into the nearest seat. I then plaster a look on my face that says, "Yes, I have been here for the last fifteen minutes and am very engrossed in what is going on."
After the meeting, I got all dressed up and prepared for call backs. I can't believe that I made it that far considering how many upper classmen and other freshmen that I was competing against. The director called the people for ensemble in first. He told us that he wanted to see our creativity and asked us to go out and create a minute long scene. The only criteria was that we were servants during the period of the play. I got a great idea right off the bat and crafted a scene that I really liked. Then I signed up for a slot to go back in. It went great, the only problem was that I think I made my scene a bit too short. Oh well, I made the directors laugh three times. I'll take that as a good sign.
I got to go after my scene, which was a relief since most of the people had to stay until around 11:00 instead of 8:30. My early exit meant that I got to go to the Caribbean dance party with Jessica and Sam. Let me just say that I had a phenomenal time. We all dressed up in kind of island-ish wear and joined the dancers. I had a really great time before Sam and Jessica left early, but my real fun started a little after their departure.
Sam introduced me to her friend Alex a few days ago. Alex just had knee surgery and just got off his crutches like yesterday. He has this huge leg brace on, so I didn't know if he'd be able to dance or not. It turns out that he can still dance really well even as a gimp. He brought his friend Johnny along who is an even better dancer. I also met this RA named Evan who is a blast to dance with. It was so funny because I danced off and on with him for like an hour before I asked his name. We were doing these hilarious dance-fight sequences.
I was dancing with all of these great people and quite a few others when Johnny started a dance circle. He did some cool moves on the ground, followed by some other really great techno dancers. I was really getting into it and kind of wanted to go in but knew I couldn't follow the others. This guy who was motioning for people to take a turn, made eye contact with me and I decided to jump on the chance. I really had no idea what I could have to offer that was worth watching, but I just let it flow. I really don't have any clue what I did in there. All I know is that I went crazy and started to do a fusion of hip hop and african dance. I could here a bunch of people cheering me on. Then all of a sudden, these two guys start coming in to join me. We kind of did these little " Bring it" gestures and started to interact. It was just plain awesome!!! I was so proud of myself and I was having the time of my life.
Later on, while Johnny and I were trading moves back and forth, he said that I had a really different style, but that he liked it a lot. I could tell that he was trying to break it down and figure it out. All I can say is good luck to him, because my dance style is ever changing and incorporates everything from Jazz,Hip Hop, soft shoe, techno, latin, to even some karate. It felt so great to just do what ever the heck I wanted on the dance floor.
I felt so free and fulfilled at many points today. I'm finally getting comfortable enough in my own skin to just go for it in whatever I do.* sighs contentedly*
