preparing for bawwctober

If at first you don't succeed, you'd better learn to duck.

Incidentally, I think I'll be very scarce shortly. If I don't post, don't go rushing off to assume I've been eaten by wolves or... whatever doomsday scenario's most common around here.

Charles, is something wrong?

No, not particularly.

I'm going to get asked this a lot today, aren't I?

Um, maybe, I guess so. It's just that the way you're talking sounds like there's some sort of problem you've got to deal with.

There's always a lot of problems to deal with, if you go out looking to solve them.

It's not anything too big, is it?

Hardly. If it were too big, it couldn't be solved at all, now could it?

Well, I guess not! But even if it can still be solved, that doesn't mean it's not big enough for whoever's solving it to get hurt. That sort of thing happens to my friends a lot, you see...

I guess what I'm saying is, even if you're going to solve it, you should be careful.

Does it now? I'm sorry to hear that.

I appreciate the concern, but really, I'm the last one who needs a warning.

Yes. It's because Mr. Nick can be a little reckless sometimes, and since he's a lawyer he spends a lot of time solving other people's problems! And sometimes they're a little more exciting than he expects them to be. Mystic Maya used to get into a lot of trouble too, actually, but it's not so bad anymore.

I'm still allowed to worry a little, right?

What sort of problems, exactly?

Of course. Feel free to worry as much or as little as you like.

Well, he's a defense attorney, so he defends people who've been wrongly accused. He works criminal law cases for the most part, and a lot of them are usually murders... oh, but I don't think he's ever defended anyone unless he's been sure there's a good chance that they're innocent! Mr. Nick's a good man, you see. He really just wants to make sure that justice is done fairly. The system on my world isn't really always that great, you see...

Okay. Good.

The system's very rarely great anywhere. I take it that it's... particularly problematic where you are?

Yes, it can be. There's a lot of people who get wrongly arrested, and it's difficult to find the truth because so many people try to cover it up.
