[Ed and Hohenheim are sitting around a campfire in a darkened clearing in the woods. Hohenheim stares into the fire, his glasses reflecting the light, his expression somber. Ed, on the other hand, looks as though he's just swallowed a bug. He stares blankly at Hohenheim, flinches when he realizes his father is looking straight at him.]
No way... [Ed runs a hand through his hair.]
[Hohenheim points to himself with his thumb.] Here's the Philosopher's Stone you've been searching for. Will you use it?
Are you nuts?! [Ed turns away.] It's made from the lives of innocent people. Al and I lost our bodies through our own mistake. It would be wrong for us to use their lives to fix ours!
[Hohenheim smiles.] I'm glad to hear you say that. Will you help me to stop his plans?
Help you? Don't get the wrong idea! I don't need to join with you to stop him! The only reason I'm listening to you is because, for now, allying with you seems like a good way to increase our chances of winning!
All right. Whatever your motivations, it's good to know we'll be doing this together.
[Ed huffs an angry sigh as Hohenheim stands.]
That's all for now. Get a bite to eat and a good night's sleep.
Er, all right... [Ed's about to walk away, but he pauses, and turns toward his father once again.] Oh! Hey! Granny Pinako asked me to give you Mom's last words. [Hohenheim stiffens.] She said, "Sorry I couldn't keep my promise. I'm going first."
[A moment passes, and then Hohenheim's shoulders begin to shake. He closes his eyes, tears streaming down his face as he sobs. Ed steps back a pace, panicking.]
Huh? Wha? Huh? A... g-grown man shouldn't cry like that!! It's weird!!
I'm... sorry... [Hohenheim removes his glasses, wiping the tears away with the heel of one hand.] You're right.
I've given you the message!! We cool? I'm gonna get some grub! Later!
[And with that, Ed beats a hasty retreat toward the nearby village. Hohenheim, meanwhile, takes his seat by the fire, sniffing loudly, fighting back the tears that threaten to spill over once again.]
So... You went on without me. We weren't able to grow old together... but you still believed that I would come and join you later. [He clasps his hands between his knees, and his despondent expression makes him appear so much older...] I'll be with you soon... Trisha...
