[six security videos from various locations in NERV HQ, three to each row, all timestamped 8:30:00 AM. various armed guards stand around in each looking at ease, if not a little sluggish from the early hour.
in the first video, a lone guard stands with his back to a row of turnstiles. he never sees the man in SWAT team clothing behind him nor expects the knife in his back. he collapses to the ground as a sudden swarm of similarly dreesed men storm past his prone, bleeding form.
the second video erupts into a blast of static when a bomb destroys it and the guards in the area.
chaos reigns in the next three for more than thirty minutes. unarmed workers are running in fear, hiding in air vents and unused rooms, pulling injured comrades to safety, pleading on hands and knees for mercy. those that run are shot in the back. those that attempt nobility are easily found and killed (at least they die before seeing their friend murdered as well). those that hide are found and killed by bullets or flamethrowers. those that beg are shot point-blank in the head and shot again and again once they fall. soldiers tramp through blood and past bodies.
throughout it all, on the last screen, a boy is curled into himself underneath a staircase. he makes no attempt to run. the soldiers, their armor emblazoned with the acronym JSSDF (Japanese Strategic Self-Defense Force, the army, protectors), find him at 8:59:13 AM. they surround him. chuckle. it's the boy hero pilot of Evangelion Unit-01 (that damned machine!), shinji ikari, hiding like a scared puppy. this whole operation was easier than expected. all that was left was the red-head foreigner and that weird girl, the First. the closest presses a pistol to the boy's head.
and shinji does nothing but wait.
one of them crumples to the floor. the others look to the right in surprise, but not before another tries and fails to shoot at whatever is coming before he falls as well. a blur kicks the infantryman away from shinji and out of frame. the two-second pause sees shinji flinching, digging his knees into his eyes. a woman--misato--returns to him, drags him away by his arm, refuses to look back or acknowledge his slow unwilling steps.
all that remains to watch are the dead.]
