I was supposed to turn 38 right after the new millennium, but I should look at the bright side that I'm not almost 50 this year, I guess. Where do the years go?

Anyway, considering I completely missed out on Y2K and all that, what did everyone else do to celebrate the year 2000? Or the closest "big" new year for everyone who either doesn't ( Read more... )

I breathed a sigh of relief the year 2000 problem didn't manifest.

So there were no missiles firing in all directions and every computer in the world didn't fail? I'm kinda disappointed.

I can categorically state that not every computer in the world failed.

Oh but a couple did, huh?

Oh, probably. C stores the date array in a single bit to save memory, which seemed like a good idea at the time, but it's a bit rough on century rollovers.

Ahhh. Yeah, so it would have assume it was the year 1900, right? Magical space beings brought computers back to help fight the Germans and polio!

[You amuse Flynn, Birkin.]

Think how efficiently they could have crashed the stock market if they'd had computers in '29.

[He aims to please~]

The New Deal better come with Windows 7 if they wanted to fix that mess.

Windows 7?

[Not only has Flynn been inside a computer with no contact with the outside world since 1989, but there is also no Microsoft in his world.]

Microsoft's last chance to say "Look! We can still make a good OS! Really! Ignore Windows 98 and Vista!" Though I will admit, it's very pretty.

[Because every world has Microsoft, right? Right. :B]

Microsoft? When did they get started?

[The giant software firm in Seattle with a large market share for its OS is Encom. Flynn was the CEO, at least until he zapped himself into the computer and forgot to leave a forwarding address.]

Mid-1980s. Eh, if you haven't heard of them, they probably just don't exist where you're from. But they basically revolutionized the personal computer. It was a big damn deal.

[Hmm.]

Are they based out of Seattle, by any chance?

Yeah, actually. Good guess.

Not really. I ran what I think is the equivalent corporation in my world for a few years.

Huh, well. Nice to meet you Bill Gates, or whatever your name is. I don't think this is the first time something like that has happened. Worlds seem to be slightly connected even without this place. It's really fascinating.
