Well if his mentality is close to a human five year old, then maybe a stuff animal? I've seen boys that age carrying those around.

Ooo right. Yeah, they don't hold up so well to abuse.
Maybe a figure? I've seen a bunch of hard rubber figures of animals, and they don't cost so much. Also they're harder to destroy.

There are also toy cars and trucks, but those can get up there in price since they're more popular. But you can probably find a decent one at like a bargain store.
