So, I just spent the last twenty minutes teaching a very irate 7 year old boy how to chase a boogeyman out from under his bed with a poker.  The poor creature didn't have a clue what to do when that little boy went after him...honestly, I'm surprised he hadn't been forewarned. Most of them know very well by now not to bother with my students ( Read more... )

In your bed? Not under?

Well, I do not really mean Here, just...in your own world. In your own home, perhaps.

In my world, I don't believe there are things like the tooth fairy. Other fairies? Those might well exist, I'm not sure.

Yeah.

Right.

That would be a no, then?

What was your first clue?

Well, it's difficult to convey sarcasm and skepticism through text, but you seem to have managed admirably.

I suspect I would not believe in them either, were I not able to see them.

I have personally fought monsters, but nothing as what you have described.

These aren't really creatures one would truly have to fight.

What sort of monsters are you familiar with?

I can be believe that. They do not sound like any real threat.

Zombies, vampires, werewolves, and other creatures drawn to darkness.

Oh.

Here those creatures are generally citizens, as long as they do not cause too much trouble.

That's just ridiculous. None of that is real, maybe only if you have an over active imagination.

They are actually quite real. It's just that people seem to lose the ability to see them as they grow older. A lot like the hogfather phenomenon, really.

And when they stop being able to see them, they stop believing in them as well. Which is what happened to you, I would think.

Hogfather. ...alright.

Well isn't that for the best then? If it goes away if you don't believe it was just a part of you imagination to begin with. And if it's harmful; its better to pretend it doesn't exist.

Well, what do you think is easier? Convincing a seven year old boy to pretend the monster he can see and hear doesn't exist, or give him a fireplace poker and teach him to face it?
