For example, when it's done on my world, the soul is placed into a machine and powers that machine. The soul has no ability to disobey the one who brought it back, and the first thing it's ordered to do is kill the one who wanted to bring them back. Then they form part of an army of killing machines, slowing becoming stronger as they kill more people.
The Earl certainly doesn't mind all that, but it's a catch for the poor sap who tried to have his loved one brought back.
When a soul is brought back from Death they are placed within a corpse. Any corpse. The soul always wishes to return to Life. Only the ones that want to return to Life linger in Death so when they are brought back they are more than happy to serve the one who brought them. Necromancers are evil and use their Dead to kill. The Dead feed on Life, so they enjoy the killing. The ones who suffer are the innocents.
... I am not sure. I never realized that Abhorsen was a title and not my father's name until recently. My knowledge of the Old Kingdom is still lacking...
Why, are you looking for a means to raise someone? I wouldn't recommend it.

I have means. I am looking to see what people think of it.

So what's the catch when you do it?

I do not raise the Dead. I send them.

My father was Abhorsen. A necromancer. But rather than raise the Dead, his job was to send them. Now that he is missing the task has fallen to me.
