CHARACTER HISTORY:
Christie starts out as a naïve high school girl who is attending her very first anime convention with her boyfriend Derek, his cousin Brett, and Brett’s girlfriend Opal. Since this is her first anime convention, the culture shock of it nearly overwhelms her. She tries to get reassurance from her boyfriend, who happens to be her co-artist on a manga they produced, but he is too busy flirting with the cosplayers to comfort her. In a fit of rage, Christie runs off and accidentally collides with the mysterious, sunglass-wearing cosplayer Matt Green.
Unsure why she feels safe to do so with Matt, the girl cries on his shoulder. Matt, feeling ashamed for yelling at her, comforts the manga writer and listens to her complaints. The cosplayer offers some advice on relationships and how to enjoy the weirdness of the convention. Christie, still unable to not be a doormat to Derek, leaves Matt to confront her boyfriend only to end up excusing his hitting on other girls.
Matt, who happens to the person stationed next to Christie’s table in artist alley, mocks her for her naïve actions. Christie gives back snark and barbs as well as she can take them from Matt. To try to get back on her good side, Matt informs the girl of the panel featuring Lida Zeff, Christie’s favorite manga artist. Unfortunately, the boy cruelly asks her if Derek would allow her to go to this panel. Christie replies with “Kindly piss off and die!”
Later, Matt, feeling bad for what he said, apologizes and the two of them becomes friends again. Unfortunately, Derek sees Matt and he promptly drags Christie back to their room. Being a hypocrite, Derek is piss that Christie is hanging out with another guy while he was off hitting on girls. They make up and all is well until he tries to take advantage of her.
The next day, Christie meets Lida Zeff and the older woman tells her how to be a better manga artist. Inspired by how kind Lida is and how cool many of the convention goers are, the girl begins to have fun at the convention. When she returns to her table and see that Derek is hitting on yet another girl, Christie understands that she doesn’t love Derek anymore nor does he truly love her. Running off to find Matt, she sees an older woman draped all over the boy. Heartbroken, the girl runs off to enjoy the convention by herself.
Later, Christie attends the j-pop rave at the convention to run into Sandra, the woman who was draped all over Matt. Sandra turns out to be Matt’s sister and encourages Christie to go talk to her brother. Meeting once again, Matt and Christie kiss. Christie, feeling ashamed for not dumping Derek yet, breaks off the kiss and runs back to her hotel room. Derek, drinking in the dark hotel room, confronts Christie about Matt. He is not thrilled by the idea that his girlfriend is dumping for another guy and he tries to rape her. Grabbing a nearby alarm clock, the girl smashes it into Derek’s head and runs off to Matt’s room. Matt, enraged by someone trying to rape Christie, goes to her room and a fight breaks out. In the end, Christie ends up staying with Matt, Sandra, and their friend Greta.
On Day three, Christie has fun at the convention with Matt by her side. Wishing that the day won’t end, the girl ends up having to leave Matt since she lives on the east coast and he lives on the west coast. This ends her first anime convention.
Christie returns to the anime convention the next year with a new artist. Matt and her romance beings to bloom when it turns out that Matt has a girlfriend in the year they were apart. While it turns out that Matt and Christie still love each other, neither wants to hurt Emily, Matt’s current girlfriend. In the end, Matt and Emily break up since Emily knows that Christie is better for Matt than she is.
The year after that in the same anime convention, Matt and Christie finally decided that they were meant for each other. They want to try to give a real relationship a try.
