Songs I never want to hear in commercials again:
1. The Bleeding Heart Show- The New Pornographers- The University of Phoenix uses this in their ads. It's just so odd and out of place. Why is a university advertising on my television anyway? How many people are going know the song? Are you trying to be a hipster college? Fuck you.
2. Signed, Sealed, Delivered- Stevie Wonder- I don't care if you're UPS, Toyota or Sanjaya Malakar. I love this song as much as the next person, but hearing it on television every four seconds makes me want to put a foot through the screen.
3. Anything by My Chemical Romance- Most notably the Friday Night Lights commercial that used Welcome to the Black Parade to promote their Texan football drama. Seriously, what the fuck?
4. Any version of Such Great Heights- It's a phenomenal, song. I have four or five versions of it on my ipod. However, watching an M&Ms commercial to the tune of Iron & Wine's version directly followed by a UPS commercial backed by the Postal Service version is excessive and just plain wrong. I'm terrified that the next time I watch Lost there will be a Wendy's ad to the sounds of the Ben Folds version. THIS MADNESS NEEDS TO END.
Songs I wish to hear in commercials:
1. Coin-Operated Boy- The Dresden Dolls- It could introduce the wonderful world of sex toys to middle America. Also, it's extremely catchy.
2. Somewhere Over The Rainbow- Rufus Wainwright- Somewhere Over The Rainbow is a fairly popular tune for commercials. If you're going to use it, why not use the Rufus version? His voice makes me melt. Guh.
3. Dumbledore's Army- Harry And The Potters- I'm looking at you, Harry Potter And the Order Of The Pheonix trailers. Throw these guys a bone.
4. Mother- Neutral Milk Hotel (John Lennon Cover)- This is the singularly most painful song I've ever listened to in my life. It's two men screeching off-key harmonies over an electric guitar (sitar?). I like to think of it as a hipster prequel to screamo. Since America is still on its "Everything bad is good" kick (see: Napoleon Dynamite, Sanjaya Malakar, Akon), this would be sure to draw positive attention to your product. Also, Neutral Milk Hotel is amazing.
