The last couple years aside I had gone YEARS without ever going to or needing to go the doctor. I was a pretty healthy kid-I got the occasional ear infection that required a quick trip to Children's Hospital (as it was essentially right behind our house)for bubblegum flavored medicine and that was that. My mom has always been big on teaching us home remedies and relying of lots of sleep to cure things. So when I got this nasty chest cold thing I figured some sleep/some laying low and some peppermint oil and steamy showers would have it cleared up quickly, but no no. It wasnt moving. I tried going back to work on Friday to no avail-made it one hour before giving up and coming home. My mom was still not convinced that it wasnt just a chest cold and that I wasnt resting as much as I should-so I gave in and didnt go to a doctor that day because I dont have insurance and if there was a chance of me not spending money I dont really have to spend I should try it. So I came home-more steam-more peppermint oil-lots of hot tea....all the relief was very short. It did allow me to do Speaking of Poetry on Friday evening but coming home after that I was exhausted and nearly collapsed. Breathe was getting shorter and shorter-coughing fits were getting more violent and there was a mysterious neck crick.  After getting zero sleep on Friday night due to the coughing and feeling terribly short of breathe I gave in and went to the CVS minute clinic. Saw a wonderful nurse practitioner who was so calming she only had to take my blood pressure once (I typically have such intense white coat syndrome that I have to be given time to relax). After some thorough questions and looking me over she told me that I have bronchitis and an ear infection..I looked at her funny when she said that 2nd thing because my ear didnt hurt. She said it was pretty severe so it may feel deeper...like maybe in my neck (AHA!) but that I'd feel it in my ear soon enough (and I have). She originally told me that the visit would cost like $92 but after realizing I had no insurance she somehow got it down to $79 which I was super grateful for. She prescribed antibiotics, some cough syrup with codine so I could get some sleep, and an albuterol inhaler to help me regain some lung capacity a lot quicker. Bonus: my blood pressure is really good even though my pulse is a little quick.
I'm already feeling a little better-slept pretty well last night-already breathing a bit deeper-though my ear and neck are still pretty sore. I am not at all happy with how far behind I have fallen on my WOWPS prep but I am a performer dammit. I have learned scripts and put on shows in 24 hours. I can still pull this out. The truth is that I probably wouldnt have sought medical attention until I was on deaths door or something if I didnt have WOWPS coming up-but its in my mind that I have worked way too hard to be too sick to slam. The nurse practitioner said I should be feeling worlds better in just a few days. I will at the very least spend time today getting that last 1 minute poem and the new 3 min more solidly in my memory.

On another note seriously right now I know like 8 people performing in or seeing the Vagina Monologues in 8 different states. I really didn't know that the show was so popular. I've personally never been a big fan of it. I have respect for Eve Ensler and respect for the show. I just have never cared for it and have found myself annoyed when people assume or expect me to like it just because I am a woman and an educated woman and an educated liberal woman and an educated  liberal woman who is also an artist. I think it  takes itself way too seriously.
Without knowing of my dislike for the show the text was once randomly assigned to me by my Performance Studies professor. The assignment was to take the text you were given and to craft an alternative performance-my response was to make a vagina puppet out of a pink sock and some pieces of a wig and drink the glass of water while the puppet "sang" the song Touch Me from the Rocky Horror Picture show. I got an A.
