It was about ten in the morning, and Maureen had just gone for a quick jog on the beach. Not that jogging was really her thing, and nor were early mornings, but she'd woken up and felt strangely motivated - which, since somewhat rare, meant she should probably go with it.
Back in Bohemia, she passed Prior's hut and made a note to go see him that afternoon to see if he'd given more thought to her offer for him to move in with her. She didn't really like living alone, and she also didn't like the idea of Prior living alone. It wasn't as if she was a nurse like Belize, but she would at least be there if something happened. Plus her hut could use a good decorator. She just hoped that his cat wouldn't terrorize Player too much.
Honestly, she'd just been so lonely since Mark left. And even if Prior wouldn't exactly be filling that void (she did love him dearly, but the man would probably scream and run away if he saw her vagina), it would be nice to have someone around. Of course, she hadn't even told him about her real feelings with respect to Mark. Mostly because she didn't want to admit it to herself. She'd thought it was bad when he'd blown her off for another woman - but now there wasn't even another woman in the picture and he was still blowing her off.
Though, speaking of Mark... She paused when she was about to pass his hut. Despite everything, she really did want to reconnect with him at least on a friendship level. And maybe... well, it had been a while since she'd done anything to imply that she was, you know, available. Maybe he thought that she didn't want him anymore, since he'd moved out.
Maybe it was partly the endorphins from the run, but Maureen suddenly felt confident and resolute. She marched up to Mark's door. She did knock, but it was Mark, not like formalities mattered. It wasn't like there was anyone in there with him - no way she could have missed him taking up with someone new. So she went ahead and pushed the door open.
If he was still asleep, maybe she'd surprise him, climb into bed with him. That would certainly get her point across...
"Mark?" she called. "You're not still in bed are you? You know, it's nearly - " Her words dropped off as she reached Mark's bed. Because she'd been wrong. He wasn't alone.
It also wasn't another woman.
They both seemed to be asleep, blankets tangled around them - though clearly naked, since the sheets were only covering half of Mark's ass (despite the fact that his face was buried in a pillow, she'd recognize both the back of his head and his ass anywhere). The other guy was half on top of him, head in the crook of Mark's shoulder, one leg strewn over Mark's thighs.
Strangely enough, it was one of the KS lesions that Maureen noticed first, followed immediately by the lovely curly hair that she'd complimented more than once. Prior.
She was so shocked that she didn't think she could have formed words even if she'd tried.
