Face and body veiled in the manner of Muslim women, Lorena observed offloading of her cargo with a critical eye, occasionally relaying orders to the crew via the overseer.

Here, and Maranjab she was only grudgingly trusted, and then only because the denizens knew her piloting skills and appreciated receiving shipments of food and bandages, and a wealth of other things she delivered. Most women, especially outsiders, were considered untrustworthy here. Still, there was something to be said for respecting and following the more important customs of a culture...When in Rome, after all.

A gust of wind threw sand around the courtyard, and beneath her dark veil, Lorena frowned. The sky remained a clear blinding blue as she watched it...but something felt wrong. Around her, the humans continued as normal, though the animals were shifting restlessly.

Lorena strode to a crate, climbing atop it, affording herself a higher view, and yet the sky remained clear as far as the eye could see, no matter what the direction...Even though the wind grew stronger in drips and drabs...
