So here I am! Surprise! I haven't dropped off the face of the earth... well, kinda. My jobs are keeping me crazy busy and my friends are taking up the rest of the time. And by "friends" I mean, of course, Harry, Hermione, and Ron. But I thought I'd take a little time out from standing and say howdy do and give you a little glimpse into my summer.
So I started working at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center (East Boston being a completely different city from Boston. Not even kidding). It's basically an old folks home, but it's so much nicer. I work at two locations, one I really like and one I really dont.
The one I like is in East Boston, and I work with one PT, one OT, a PTA, and two Rehab Aides (three including myself). Laura is the PT, a really cute and bubbly redhead who is just one of the nicest people, which makes sense as most PTs are awesome. Mike, the OT, with his strong voice and beautiful body, as well as an amazingly fun and welcoming personality. Karen, one PTA, is absolutely out of her mind, and makes everyone laugh constantly. Whether it be singing loudly in Italian (of which she knows all of three words) or dancing or just basically being herself. The two rehab aides, Nancy and Janice, are as different as can be. Nancy is simple and loyal with an innocent honesty and a laugh she could have stolen from the Cowardly Lion. Janice is sharp as a tack and unabashedly East Bostonian, from her hahsh ahccent to her freedom with swear words, to her uncanny ability to make you feel completely at ease and yet yearn for her to allow you to be close to her. Everyone comes together in this absolutely amazing mish mash of fun times.
The place I don't like is in Winthrop, and I've mercifully only had to work there one day, so I don't really know anyone very well. My overall impression is that they see themselves as superior to me and to each and every patient. When the PT and Rehab Aide laugh, it's as fake and pushed as the smiles of children who have not yet learned how to smile, their eyes imploring someone to verify that what they're laughing at is, indeed, funny. Bill, the PTA is pompous and self centered, and when he talked to me it was more like he just wanted to hear himself talk rather than actually explain anything to me. Plus he wears pants tight enough that his ball sack bulges out every time he sits down, his legs invariably spread so wide everyone gets an unavoidable view. The only good thing about that place was that I was able to go to the water for lunch by myself and sit and watch the waves coming in.
And of course, my boss. Jayne Gibson. A woman so massive it's a wonder how she ever got into anything near a health profession. She's independently wealthy, so only works to fill the time. I find it fascinating that she prefers to stick around the severe dementia patients who she never has to get deeper than a greeting with, and most of whom will blurt "I love you" at the sight of a moving body in an attempt for some human contact, but then quickly forget you once you're out of sight. They break my heart. Jayne is intimidated by me because I'm friends with her boss's daughter, and tries to hide it by taking me out for lunch and showing me to the water front. When she drives she does an accelerate-coast pattern that causes anyone in the passenger seats to become a human metronome, and speaks ignorantly about how the term Mainiac (Mainer) is French, Masshole is too offensive to be spoken in her midst, and how everyone from the Midwest is much more leftist and close minded than anyone in the northeast could ever be. She's the kind of Masshole that true Massachusetts avoid, and the kind of boss whose underlings breath a deep sigh of relief every time she leaves the room.
I'm still at Barnes and Noble, though I only work there once or twice a week. I see everyone still in BN outings, such as to the movies or Fudruckers. Next Saturday we're having a party. So like I said, I've been keeping busy. I'm up to Montreal in a week and a half, and after that it's working until I get back to Athens. So I hope everyone is having a good time and I'm sorry if I've bored you, but that's where I am and what I'm doing. This is my good life.
