Phil arrived yesterday but since I couldn’t meet him for dinner last night, I suggested having monja today for lunch. Despite telling myself that I’d totally sleep in once the weekend finally arrived, I woke up nice and early at 8am and felt fully awake, so I went to Tsukishima early on my bike and biked around for a couple of hours before meeting up with Phil and Fiona at lunchtime. We went to the famous “monja street” and picked a random restaurant out of the dozens that were there all selling the same thing. I still prefer okonomiyaki (which we had one of as well), but monja ain’t bad. For one thing, you have to eat it slowly, so it’s good for your digestion I guess…?
Afterwards we walked back to my place to drop off my bike. I quickly showed them the hospital and we then looked for a post office so Fiona could get money out, with little success since they all close so damn early. I really don’t understand this weird thing of having a closing time for ATMs - it makes it seriously a pain in the ass if you need to withdraw cash after hours or even at reasonable hours on the weekend. Anyway, Phil needed some daily necessities so we then went to the Don Quixote in Ginza, where they sell a bit of everything! It’s always interesting to see what they have, which is usually a lot. Finally, we headed back to near Fiona’s place and had curry for dinner. Why does restaurant curry always taste better than home curry? I swear they add some special spice. Or maybe I just suck at getting the consistency right. Mine always come out too runny.
So yeah, ‘twas great to catch up with old friends again. I can’t say I’m not a little envious of Phil for having a whole year ahead in Tokyo, but who knows what my own future will hold? I should stop keep coming back to Japan and nowhere else, so I’ll find some other cool place to live for a little while next time.
