They had spent the whole day in New York City. From what Donna gathered, the Doctor thought it would be a little well deserved break from all of their running. At first she was suspicious of his motives, wondering if there wouldn’t be another invasion planed for the New Years. But the Time Lord had convinced her that it would be a normal day on Earth today and that aliens had a habit of invading on Christmas day rather than on New Years Eve.
So Donna didn’t take this day off for granted and dragged the Doctor shopping. The stores were busy, there were many people trying to get their hands on the after Christmas specials. No worries thought, the ginger woman didn’t lose her touch and got few good deals on clothes, a couple of hats, and of course a pair of running shoes. She really needed those, seeing that her last ones were eaten by some alien pet.
After the shopping spree, they both decided to see a Broadway play. Even if she enjoyed the musical very much she could have done without the Doctor babbling about it afterwards. They had also eaten a couple of hotdogs that they bought from the suspicious food vendors on the streets.
‘Overall’, Donna thought, ‘the day was well spent.’
She was presently sitting on a roof top where the Doctor had landed the TARDIS. He had insisted that they watch the New Year’s Eve Ball crash, and Donna agreed to it having never seen the event LIVE. As the crowds of people were gathering on the Times Square, Donna decided that she was glad that she wasn’t down there on the streets. There were probably one million people there and she wasn’t sure if she could stand there for hours, waiting for midnight, squeezed in like a sardine. Also, from where they were they had a perfect view on the whole square and on the New Year’s Ball.
Donna sighed contently as she reflected on her past year: meeting the Doctor again, first travel through time, first visit on a planet, meeting different people, the stolen planets, losing her memories, gaining her memories back, finding the Doctor again and inviting herself back to travel with him. Donna smiled to her self as the Doctor sat next to her. They sat there in a comfortable silence awaiting the countdown.
When the countdown has begun the Doctor rose to his feet offering Donna a hand that she gladly accepted. They counted together until 0 still holding hands, and as the confetti exploded on the streets, the Time Lord’s and the human’s lips met. At first Donna intended to give the Doctor the usual New Years kiss: not too long and very platonic. The problem was that none of the two wanted the kiss to end. And just like that a little innocent kiss soon turned into something much more.
The kiss seemed to last countless minutes for Donna and when they separated in need of air, she noticed that her hands were on his shoulders and his were on her arms. They looked at each other’s amused eyes and the Doctor leaned in to kiss Donna again. But she put her hand in front of his mouth so he kissed it instead. He made a puzzled face.
“Only one New Year's kiss” she answered, her eyes twinkling with mirth.
The Doctor let out a giggle and took Donna by the hand then proceeded to walk them to the TARDIS.
As soon as they crossed the doors he let go of her hand and hurried to the ship’s controls.
“So Spaceman,” Donna asked as she joined him at the TARDIS console, “where are we going next?”
The Doctor grinned at her with his trademark cheeky grin. “Well, to London on the 31st December 2009 of course! Where else?”
