I've been playing around with different projects as I go, pushing my limits and really stretching my skills. I've been working on the hand-glove/gauntlet on and off as I work out how I want to manage it.
So while looking for other similar glove/mitt/gauntlet patterns I came across of all things, a grocery bag dispenser. Rather then buy one, I've been stuffing bags into bags. We use the plastic bags as smaller garbage can liners, or for other projects, packagaing stuffing, etc. We try to not /just/ throw them out, and when they get to be too much (because of laziness or forgetfulness because, yes we do have the re-usable shopping bags) I often take them to stores that recycle them if I can.
However sometimes they do go in the garbage staight away. *sighs*
So when I saw this I was like.. OOOHHH!! yes. :)
So my practice piece is made of a pale canary-like yellow. :) Here's the pattern. I've attempted to explain it below (how I interpreted it). The pattern is repeated w/ clarification under the lj-cut.
http://www.allfreecrafts.com/crochet/bag-dispenser.shtml Materials:
Worsted Weight Cotton
Crochet Hook, Size H (5.00mm) *I'm using size G)
Two 5” elastic ponytail bands
Make slip knot and loop over the hook, then:
Rnd 1: Join to [elastic pony tail] with a slip st. Ch 3, 29 dc around [ponytail band] ring. Slip st to top of beginning ch 3.
** Basically as one might do the start of a round wherein one normally makes might make the dc stitches in the same loop of the base chain - one instead uses the pony tail loop /as/ the base chain loop.
Rnd 2 & 3: Ch 3, dc in backloop of each st around. Slip st to top of beginning ch 3.
* Self explanitory for those who can read crochet instructions. 2 rows of the same pattern.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, *skip one st, sc in next st, ch 3 * around. Slip st to beginning ch 1.
* These are small arches. Think like a fish-net-base beginning pattern. However the next set of directions are a bit weird as they do not continue the "net".
Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc in next ch 3 loop, dc in previous ch 3 loop. *dc in next unworked loop, dc in previous loop * around. Slip st to beginning dc.
** This is a criss-crossing pattern. You go forward to the first arch, then reverse directions and make the next DC in the /same/ loop as the DC before it. Then you skip to the next un-worked loop (middle stitch of next arch) DC in it, then back up to the one prior to it. This repeats until you get to the end, back and forth, and back and forth.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 2,* sc in next st, ch 2 * around. Slip st to beginning sc.
* This expands/increasres the number of stitches in the round.
Rnd 7: Ch 2, dc in next ch 2 loop, dc in previous ch 2 loop. *dc in next unworked loop, dc in previous loop * around. Slip st to beginning dc.
** This is just like Rnd 5, where you criss-crossing your stitches.
** What these are doing is making the base of the dispenser wider, so it's funnel-like.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around. Slip st to beginning sc.
* Easy enough to understand if you can read crochet patterns.
Rnd 9: Ch 3, working in backloops only, dc in each st around. Slip st to top of beginning ch 3.
Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in same st. Ch 2, * skip one st, sc in next st, ch 2 * around. Slip st to beginning sc.
Rnds 11: Slip st into loop. Ch 1, sc in same loop. Ch 3, * skip one loop, sc in next loop, ch 3 * around. Create final loop of rnd with ch 1, sc in beginning sc.
Rnds 12-27: Ch 1, sc in same loop. Ch 3, * sc in next loop, ch 3 * around. Create final loop of rnd with ch 1, sc in beginning sc.
* This is your basic net pattern, although it's a bit confusing.
Chain 1 then SC in the same base loop the chain connects to.
Then chain 3
**Repeat: SC in next loop*, chain 3
Next you can either do a single crochet stitch inside the arch (using the whole arch) or you can SC in the middle stitch of the arch (2nd chain of the 3 chain). This is what creates the diamond-like pattern of the open netting.
*This whole pattern is repeated for 15 rounds (or longer if you want a longer dispenser bag).
Rnd 28: Ch 3, dc in each loop and each st around. Slip st to top of beginning ch 3.
* This is the top portion where the "net" framework ends.
Rnd 29: Slip st in each st around. Do not Fasten off.
* This helps to "finish" the opening.
Ring for Hanging. Work 44 sc around the second elastic band. Slip st to next st on Rnd 29. Fasten off.
