While I'm thinking of it...

Spur of the moment thing; the 7 animated movies I've seen so far that have had the greatest effect on me personally, in no particular order.

The Lion King - I adored this movie when it originally hit theaters, and still do. I was 'of that age', it grabbed me and took me over for a while. I listened to all of the music (Return to the Pridelands was my particular favorite album), collected all of the toys and cards, and was really keyed in to a lot of what I enjoy about animation now all these years later. This was rekindled a little when the Broadway play came out, but nothing's ever like the original...

The Secret of N.I.M.H - I took this movie for granted when I was little. This ranks in my book as the best of Don Bluth's animation (yes, I like it even more than Land Before Time), and the degree of acting translated so well into animation is what I still find so captivating about this film. Add to it the fact that this film was SCARY, it was dark and violent and would probably never get into theaters without a PG-13 rating these days. Although I love the book, I'd rather watch the movie than read the novel any day.

Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series - The First Face Off - Okay, okay, maybe direct-to-VHS things shouldn't count, especially being that this 'movie' is really just three episodes of the TV series strung together with some ADR. Regardless, I'd be lying to myself if I covered over the impact that this series had on me for the purposes of posterity. I. Love. This. Show. No need to justify it on my end.

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker - Here's another one that never saw theaters. This movie makes it in because the Batman animated series lines had their hooks in me at a very early age, so I've got a history with this franchise. Add to that the fact that I really enjoyed the TV series, and this movie went places that I'd never expected it to go. I touched beforehand on the fact that dark and scary movies usually aren't a hit with the kids. In terms of kid-geared movies produced within the last 10 years, this is about as dark as they come. Real consequences for characters that aren't neon-colored or sing songs every five minutes. Hell yes.

9 - My current fix. I do indeed hope that this movie gains in popularity in the next few years, taking its rightful place as a standout in recent animated features. Visually and story-wise, this film is worlds apart from what a modern animated picture has come to be stereotyped into, and I feel lucky just to have such a thing be made at all in the first place, given that studios nowadays work for money, not for art. I could rave about this film all day. In short, this movie makes it onto my list; Nightmare Before Christmas does not.

Princess Mononoke - I have seen most of Miyazaki's films, but Princess Mononoke was my first and still my favorite. The theme of man vs. nature is a favorite of mine, but this take was something thankfully different from the done-to-death Fern Gully approach. Beautiful, original, and still unique amongst everything else I've seen.

Fantasia - The original, thank you very much. I honestly hope that Disney continues to produce more films like these. This was a massive jump for Disney, a complete re-imagining of the philosophy behind what an animated feature could do to and for an audience. I hope that someday, animation can return to the sphere of viewing by general audiences, not just little kids or families. Fantasia captured everyone, from the orchestra-listening elite to babies who couldn't yet understand dialog. Although you'd think the Rite of Spring sequence would be my favorite (it's up there now!), it's actually the first piece of music in the film that almost always brings tears to my eyes. There's nothing in this offering that I particularly dislike, either. This is a classic that I literally grew up with as background music - something my parents would pop into the VCR so that we could have something to listen to and watch as the day went by. Another film I took for granted as a child.
