I might catch some flack for this, but quite frankly, I am so sick and tired of this nonsense.
As much as I would like to say "occasionally", frequently on my Facebook, I have family and some friends of friends (or friends of friends of friends who I met briefly in passing but then decided they needed to add me as a Facebook friend) who will post the most ridiculous things. Recently, a song was posted which I think was called "America and God: my arms are tired from hugging you so much".
Ok, so it probably wasn't called that, but I'm not sure of the actual name of the song - A quick YouTube search reveals that it's called "In God We Still Trust" and searching a little further, it looks like it was released about 7 years ago by Diamond Rio for the first time on their second "Greatest Hits" album (This search took five minutes). Now, I know you might be thinking, "Elka, are you really surprised that people are dredging mud up from stuff that happened 7 years ago on Facebook? Really?" No, I am not. Nor am I surprised that people are sharing the shit out of it and taking it for gospel (that pun wasn't intended, but there you go). What really bothers me is what they fucking say.
A song some radio stations are banning, the song you are about to listen to, was played at a Las Vegas Diamond Rio concert.
They received an immediate resounding standing ovation, and continue to do so every time they perform it! (Read the last line)
Sadly, major radio stations wouldn't play it because it was considered politically incorrect'. (No, it's overplayed garbage)
Consequently, the song was never released to the public. (
Actually it was, 7 years ago)
Now Congress is getting involved. (No, sorry, not true)
Your President is saying that is not fit for release because it offends so many. (Also not true)
So America , see what you think...
If this offering speaks to your heart and you feel you want to share it with friends and loved ones, please do so now.
This song does offend me, but not because I am agnostic (ok, it does offend me a little for that reason, especially considering how quickly the same people who vehemently fight for the second amendment are the same ones who readily forget or shrug off separation of church and state, but that's another story entirely). It offends me because I am supposed to feel patriotic when I see horrible images of the few terrible things that we didn't bring upon ourselves with tawdry words that put a facade of empowerment on the whole thing[1]. And after that, I am supposed to associate said patriotism with God. I am offended that a person would use open wounds of our people to make a few bucks and that since I don't believe in his god, I am somehow unpatriotic. That's low. They have insulted my intelligence and patriotism as an American.
I do feel patriotic, but not for those reasons. I know that that band is going to make a ton of money at every Mid-Western fireworks show for life. They have reached nearly perfect capitalistic efficiency by appealing to the lowest common denominator.
All this song proves is that we, as a country, can be manipulated with a few cheap words and boxed wine. Stay classy America.
[1]: I want so badly to believe that President Bush and VP Chaney didn't set in motion the terrible tragedy on September 11th, and for the most part I do; however, I find myself shoving down skepticism in my effort to convince myself it was all not planned.
