Vacation with Derek Review

Jun 26, 2010 13:35

I had to vent my feelings. ;) Let me know what you thought, too! MAJOR SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD! DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED.

Things I liked about the movie:
-Road trip with Derek and Casey. <3
-The touching... omg the touching. When he pulls her into a dance at the beginning and touches her back... when they're in the canoe and he has his hand on her back and they're rocking back and forth... Yes.
-Lizzie. Okay, I was never Lizzie's biggest fan before to tell you the truth, but I LOVED her in this movie. Her hair was freaking adorable, she was totally in character, and her love interest = so sweet! I have full confidence that she will keep the house orderly and awesome when Case and Der leave for college.
-THE OLD GUY. "I hate teenagers." He took constant abuse the whole movie, but he was freaking awesome.
-Edwin being a weirdo. I've always loved his weirdness. And his deep voice made me laugh. And bringing back his terrible jokes. That won in characterization big time.
-Edwin's friends hitting on Casey.
-Casey diving into the lake after Derek. Oh. My. Gosh.
-The plot wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be. A little too much dancing, but it wasn't too bad.
-The outfits. There wasn't a single costume I didn't like in this movie. Casey's orange dress in the beginning was adorable.
-OUTSIDE! They had a backyard... and a frontyard. And it was lovely! I liked the outdoors!
-I'm pretty confident that Derek was only interested in Roxy for a) her money and b) the fact that she looked a lot like Casey
-"Didn't think you had it in you, dude."
-CRAZYLEGS. Oh my gosh. And Casey laughing at crazylegs. So cute.
-Casey telling Felicia off. It was about time that lady got a smackdown. I'm very proud of Casey for standing up against her Gran and defending George. It was awesome.
-Felicia's change of heart, and her relationship with Marti. That was SO cute. Also, Nora's backstory. That was so interesting and nice to see! I love backstory. ;)
-Lizzie and Derek's bonding. AW. That was so sweet, and I have to say that I loved it! (Ps: notice how he never calls Casey his sister.)
-DEREK PULLING CASEY AWAY AND DANCING WITH CASEY. HOLY MOTHER. She obviously wanted to dance with him more than Jesse. ;)
-The typical Derek outakes. LOVE.

Things that failed:
-Um before we get to Miss. Gigglefit and Mr. Twinkleotes, I would just like to address the parents we all know and love. Dear Nora and George, what were you THINKING? If this was a Dasey Snark review, you would be off the scale on the "call a social worker" section. Um, it was clear that Felicia didn't want the Venturis there, so why on earth did George and Nora leave MARTI AND EDWIN with Felicia, and not even wait for Derek and Casey to arrive?! Um... I guess I will just ignore this ginormous plot hole and focus on the rest of the movie... That just thoroughly upset me.
-The love interests. Did anyone else pick up on the fact that Derek and Casey were basically dating carbon copies of themselves in the opposite gender form. (Personality wise anyway) Sure, Derek isn't rich like Roxy, but he's arrogant, "totally aware of how cute he is," and pretty apathetic most of the time. Jesse is a dancer, and he's ... woo hoo. I mean, there wasn't much dynamic to that guy. But he seemed to be a lot like Casey. I feel like Daphne was trying way too hard to set Der and Case with the "perfect" match, but all she did was fail with characters that fell flat, and guys who looked WAY too old to be hitting on 17/18 year-old-girls.
-An almost sort of feel of Derek and Casey going back to square one. There was absolutely no mention of Truman or Emily, which, you know, no one likes them anyway :P, but it would be nice to get some closure with the other characters! I also felt like Derek and Casey's dynamic has less of a role and was put aside for the plot/love interests. And excuse me, did Tuesday Aftersoon Fever even exist?!
-The slow mo. Dear Daphne, lay off of the slow mo please. I mean, the cheese made me laugh, but still. xD
-Casey looking too much like Ashley and Derek looking to much like Mike. (also, Daphne's woman crush on Ashley showing through)
-The random "I don't think I should go to college, just dance... hur hur Casey" Because dancing was NEVER Casey's life. It was always academics, and taking a year off of college is out of character. WAY out of character. I mean I guess if opportunity comes knocking, you'll want to take it, but what about her scholarship? Her first year with Derek? (Don't do it Casey, don't do it)
-The baby's name... Simon. No offense but... Actually I just kind of hated the "one year later" thing overall. I didn't feel like it was necessary. And nobody changed or grew up. It just looked dumb.

Overall I was definitely more pleased with it then I thought I was going to be! I guess it was good to set my expectations low. :P More Dasey than I expected and better plot. I just couldn't stand the love interests. They definitely could have been left out. And of course it was AMAZING to see our family back together again! <3 I love them, and Life with Derek. Even though I feel like I was WAY more upset when the show ended. Lol I didn't even tear up from this. I guess this is the end? Unless somehow we can magically squeeze some more Dasey out of Daphne. I would seriously get on my knees and beg for "College with Derek" or something to that matter if I could. But I'm looking forward to hopefully a revival of LWD love, and more Dasey videos on youtube!
PS: I MISS ALL OF THE DASEYERS SOOOOO MUCH! <3
PSS: I just realized I don't have a Dasey icon! *runs off to make one*

Thank you so much for the movie, Blair! (DisforDasey) I would never have been able to watch it without you! <3 You are the greatest friend ever. (Not just for that of course!) And I also love your opinion of the old man. I agree, and I included him in this review. Because he's my new fave character. <3 Love you!
