I fart Maine

Nov 05, 2009 20:13

I was farting in the shower last night and noticed that it smelled like low tide. Maybe if Maine were cool enough to have same-sex marriage I would be able to fart freakin' coffee and doughnuts. (I realize that other states have coastline, coffee, and doughnuts, but not in the way that Maine does. Trust me ( Read more... )

I confess: I made the lobster-Leviticus joke as well.

I don't know, I had a number of gay and lesbian friends in high school, my mom's best friend is gay and we hung out with them a lot, and (aside from the truly ignorant jerks in our class) most people seemed to either be okay with it or not give a shit one way or the other. I did see the religious aspect growing up; I think the pockets of Roman Catholics in central and northern Maine are more entrenched than people think and there were/are a ton of fundamentalists in southern Maine. Either way, *I* was shocked and heartbroken about the vote.

When I was in high school I don't think I knew anyone who was out. (Some of the friends that you and I had in common came out while I was in college.) I can remember the music teacher saying some homophobic things, although a couple years later he lost his job because he was the kind of guy who made lots of bad decisions. Anyway, personally I didn't know what to think of homosexuals until I got to college and became friends with people that were out.

I was in fact very shocked and upset last year with how the vote turned out in California. Didn't have a lot of those emotions left for this year with Maine.

sorry for tangent.. but damn that post is making the rounds.

know what gets me? when we were new to the internet around 8 years ago the author and i were bffs (i believe i was 16, she 14?). iirc, we were internet-married and she left me for a bowl of rice, chatted every day, and were just all around goofballs.

these days shes kind of a political activist and i think well known on her campus for being a militant atheist. like, the kind that has "fiction for fiction" drives where if you bring in a bible or koran or the like, they'll trade you a fantasy or scifi book for it. and have demonstrations with huge flying spaghetti monster signs. it makes me vaguely uncomfortable seeing these on facebook since in my mind thats just as bad as the hardcore your-religion-is-wrong christians, only a touch worse because of the disrespecting the books (while i dont follow any religion, the idea of throwing out or defacing a holy book of any kind makes me really, really uncomfortable).

Wow, small internet.

I have no problem with humanist, live-and-let-live atheists, but I agree with you that militant atheists are as disturbing and offensive as militant religious fundamentalists.
