email vs. voicemail
I am conditioned to expect any non-face-to-face communication to come from a computer that I sit down at on my own time, not from a little device that I'm expected to carry with me 24/7. I don't know if that's the BlitzMail culture permanently embedded in my behavior, or if it's just the fact that I don't get a lot of calls but have an interesting online life.
My parents like to get an email from me every night to know that I'm okay, which might seem silly, but I'm happy to do it because they don't require that the email have any actual content. My mom is off visiting some friends in Florida, so apparently she called me yesterday to check in since she hadn't been able to get on email. Then she called again worried because I hadn't responded. I didn't even know she had called until I got an email from her this morning (at which point she knew I was okay, because she had the usual emails from me in her inbox). This is pretty typical for me and I wonder if I should change my voicemail message to tell people to send me an email if it's urgent. Or maybe my parents just have unrealistic expectations based on the fact that my brother doesn't always respond to email but has his cell phone in his pants constantly.
Or I wonder if I could set something up with Verizon so that I'd receive an email to notify me of new voicemail.
