Through creativity shall you know her

LJ brought home her mid-year report card last night. Three As (English, Art and Design), three Bs (Maths, History and Environmental Studies) and three Cs (Science, Physical Education and Italian). The kidlet's confidence, persistence, co-operation and organisation were rated "outstanding". Her teacher noted the "several minor social issues" she has experienced in the past six months while praising her use of "appropriate strategies" to resolve them herself.

She's one smart cookie, this kid of mine. Resilient, too. Had her marks dropped amidst all her troubles, no one would have blamed her. Instead she survived and, indeed, thrived despite the distractions, and for that I'm both grateful and proud. The person she's becoming through all this... the young woman being built by these successes and challenges... is a pretty amazing person, and it's a revelation to watch her personality develop. What's also interesting is the different ways she expresses that personality.

Case in point? Meet Elementora.

Elementora is LJ's self-made Monster High character. Last weekend she bought herself a few of those "build-a-monster" packs and crafted the ghoul that's existed within her mind for the past few months. Physically crafted by mixing a gorgon with a harpy, Elementora is actually the daughter of a European-style dragon. She spent her early life in an opulently-appointed cave with her father and their pet dog. Because she learned about the outside world through old books (she reads like her dad hordes treasure), Elementora's personal fashion style is very retro.

Having finally convinced her father to let her attend Monster High she's extremely excited, if a bit shy and nervous, about being the new ghoul on campus. Elementora gets teased a lot because she finds everything about school exciting (pop quizzes, tests, homework - she'd only read about such things before!) but her passion for learning meant she made fast friends with Ghoulia Yelps, the genius zombie. Like her father, Elementora has power over the four elements but lacks his fine control... so she often gets blamed for the freak bursts of wild weather that plague the halls of Monster High.

If you've ever seen a Monster High book or DVD, you'd know Elementora fits perfectly into that world. And if you've ever met LJ, you'll understand just how autobiographical this dragon is.
