In which Phoenix is a cat (part..3ish?)

Jan 02, 2008 22:32

( Part 1 & 2ish here )

This took longer than it should have. Writer's block hit in a "hey, this story has derailed from my original idea!" sort of way. I still know where I'm going, just have to kind of trailblaze to get there now. :/  Plus, rest-of-kink-meme is quite distracting... Ah well, enough of that. Storytime. :)

“...It’s impossible.” He said it under his breath, but I don’t think he was trying to hide it either. “It’s...It’s not possible! ...Just how...It isn’t possible!”

Ugh...

“F-For one thing...think of the body mass! There’s a tremendous difference!”

“Edgeworth...”

“Can you explain that!?”

You said I’d just have to prove that I’m Phoenix Wright, not explain the physics of it all!

...Besides, I’ve seen Pearls channel Mia plenty of times and the universe is still intact...

“Um...”

“...Just how...How am I supposed to believe something like this!?”

Okay, so I didn’t want to believe it either, but I guess I am in a better position to accept it.

“Don’t you have anything to say to any of this!?”

Er...Oh. I guess I’d better uh, type something.

[lik wat]

“Grkkk...Like what!? If it’s true, how did it happen!? How about starting there!?”

“Ack!”

How did it happen?? I have no idea!!

[dunno]

“You don’t know!!?”

I winced. His anger level was getting dangerously high...

[cant remmber]

That seemed to catch him off guard.

“...You can’t remember?” he said quietly. I could hear the doubt in his voice, but I guess he hadn’t considered that possibility before either.

I shook my head.

“W-Well...” He gripped his arm and looked to the side. “Do you at least have any idea how to reverse it?”

...No. I...I don’t, do I...?

I swallowed and gazed downwards, not really looking at anything. Until then, I hadn’t thought that far ahead. All I’d been focusing on was telling Edgeworth, as if that would fix everything. But of course it wouldn’t. Even though I’d told him that I was a cat, the fact still remained that I was...a cat...

As much as it pained me to do so, I shook my head.

The silence following that seemed to fill the entire house. I could feel my breathing tense up.

“...Wright?”

I glanced up at the sound of my name. His expression changed as soon as I did. Even though he was probably trying to hide it, I could recognize the new one as...pity. He looked away again.

“You...You’re free to stay here...if you wish...until...” He seemed pained at trying to figure out how to phrase what he meant.

“...Thanks,” I said, to save him the trouble.

“...Don’t mention it,” he mumbled.

I raised whatever eyebrow-equivalent I had.

...Did he just respond to a meow?

When he looked at me again, his expression was back to his usual glower.

“I presume it would be too much of me to ask who did this to you, if you can’t even remember how it happened...”

I sighed and nodded.

“...This is a bit problematic...”

A bit!? Way to understate the situation...

He frowned. “I...suppose I’d better call Gumshoe...” he said to himself.

Oh yeah...He’s still looking for me, isn’t he?

Edgeworth flipped open his cell phone and put it to his ear. I’m guessing that he dialed Gumshoe, but it was so fast I didn’t see it.

“Sir!” came Gumshoe’s voice from the other end, “Wh-What is it!? I didn’t find anything new yet--”

“I know. Return here immediately.”

“Huh!!? But-”

“I’ll explain when you get here.”

“But what about Mr. Wright!?”

“......Didn’t I just say I’d explain when you got back?”

“Huh? Uh...Well...yes...but...”

“Let’s leave it at that, shall we?”

“Oh. ...Um...”

“I’ll see you in a bit, Detective.”

“R-Right...”

Edgeworth hung up. I already had my message waiting for him.

[how r u gonna expln ths]

For the first time that evening, he smirked. “Actually, I was planning on letting you handle that part, Wright.”

“What!?”

He chuckled. “Remember that it is Gumshoe we’re talking about. Make it simple. And try spelling correctly for once.”

“Grrrrr...”

Why can’t you just do it, Edgeworth!? Even if it is ridiculous, you know he’ll believe it if it comes from your mouth!
