It isn't based on the Eragon stories, though. I've actually never read those. It's based on Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series which, if you've never read it and you like dragons, you should. I used to read the books to distraction back in middle school/high school (nearly memorized Dragonflight, actually). Eragon owes a lot to McCaffrey in terms of characterization of the dragons as she's the one who basically pioneered the idea of "friendly" dragons who are ridden by humans.

I can't tell you how much I adore this visit to Pern! From an avid McCaffrey reader (who had a Pern Fandom obsession :P) I love your characterizations of the boys in Pern!!!! *hugs* Thank you so much for this!!

I love that J'red and J'sen have all these personal issues and that their dragons are making them work it out (so dragonlike to make the mating flight part of it :P). And I love the slip up about training! Tee hee hee... I can totally picture J'red and Peroth out watching the greens fly to try to work out a strategy that would win over Carinth during a flight :P Tee hee hee... just goes to show that preparation and perseverance does help!

God I hope you plan on revisiting Pern again!

Oh thank you! =D I'm glad that I passed the test of an avid reader because it's been YEARS since I've read McCaffrey! I practically memorized Dragonflight back when I was 15 but I found that, much to my dismay, I didn't remember much beyond some character names and the dragon colors. So I had to Google for this! xD And as I read up on a few things (like the oaths and sayings), others started coming back to me. I tried to work in as much specific detail as I could (what the use of doing Pern if I wasn't going to go all Pern, right? =D ).

They have many, many personal issues! I love having that dynamic. And yes! xD That was exactly what I was picturing happening! Sitting in a field and just studying the swoops and dives, Peroth kind of wondering what the point is and assuring J'red that he knew how to fly just perfectly fine but willing to indulge J'red on this, especially seeing as how J'red has his heart so set on it. And J'red, of course, is convinced that this is his only chance to even get J'sen to stand still long

And the detail was great! If you ever need a Pern-addict's brain to pick, let me know! I've been trying to work up the nerve to do a Pern crossover myself and just haven't been able to settle on a plot yet :P One of these days though... :P

I know that Ms. McCaffrey did a lot of her writing in the 60s and so couldn't really touch on these issues in detail but, damn, girl - such a wonderful job of looking at the situation that greenriders would face during mating flights. It's such a bizarre idea for our culture - de facto designated bottoms in a military setting - but I think you did an excellent job of exploring dynamics of that sort of position and the kind of taunting and abuse they might face (not to mention the sort of shit that J'red would get from other bronzes for wanting a green instead of a queen). And that's on top of the (as ever) hot smutty goodness. Very cool - I'm glad you posted.

Aww, thank you! =D And I adore your ideas, Morag! That's a very intriguing thought to put out there and I think you're exactly right! Designated bottoms in military settings plus the hierarchies and the pride and prestige/prejudices that come with each is just fascinating. I'm so glad that this fic worked for you (especially considering that half the time, I had no idea what I was doing...)
