The Game's the Thing Podcast Goes Systemless With Freeport

May 28, 2008 14:08

Episode 32 of The Game's the Thing podcast contains a worthwhile interview with Chris Pramas about their Freeport setting going systemless.

You can listen to it here.

This episode is of particular interest because the whole concept of a truly systemless RPG setting that can be run with virtually any RPG system is a relatively new animal.

So far Green Ronin has published their systemless Pirates Gude to Freeport as well as rules companions for True20, d20 and Savage Worlds. Another companion for Castles and Crusades is in the works, and the upcoming fantasy comicbook supplement for Mutants and Masterminds, Warriors and Warlocks, is going to contain M&M rules for Freeport as well.

So Freeport will soon have published material for five game systems and counting, including at least two systems (C&C and Savage Worlds) which are not published by Green Ronin. To the best of my knowledge this is an unprecedented move on Green Ronin's part. If successful, this could catch on and herald a whole new strategy for publishing RPG material. I'm not saying it will replace the current methods, only that it might represent a new way of thingking in the RPG industry. How big this effect will be remains to be seen, but it is certainly a trend to watch.
