Storms

As mostly a weather witch myself, on principle, I do not do storms. I will not intentionally actively invoke anything that is potentially hazardous or destructive. It is a matter of morality... But I LOVE them when they do happen naturally.

Wind, Rain, Thunder and Lightning, Blizzard, Hale, it doesn't matter...

I haven't enjoyed a good storm in a long time, and yesterday, while at work (I have no windows), I kept hearing this sound like low flying aircraft over head. I didn't pay it much notice, and I was off work anyway, just puttering around on the computer trying to do some LJ catchup. I thought it a bit unusual until someone said that it must be raining pretty heavily outside.

My eyes must have gotten as wide as saucers at that point, and that was about all it took for me to log out of my workstation and leave for the day to go out and stand in the parking lot in the middle of the downpour and get lost in the sensation of the fat drops as they drenched my clothes in icy water in a matter of seconds. I wish it was a little warmer so I could have stayed out in it longer, but it very quickly chilled me to the bone and I had to retreat reluctantly into the shelter of my car and the warmth of my heater.

I was watching the sky, hoping for that rare treat of the flash of lightning followed by the low rumble of thunder... unfortunately, the black and gray clouds did not seem to give up any of that pyrotechnic display.

After I got home, I took a break from my enjoyment of storm watching while I was making myself something to eat when my GF called me to ask if there were any road closures due to flooding between Girdwood and Anchorage (she was returning from a a festival in Ninilchik). She said that the vendor she was traveling with was told by his son that there was at least 4 inches of water covering some roads in Anchorage on the south side, and that there may be road closures due to flooding or delayed traffic.

I couldn't find any reports of road closures or flood warnings yet. Then she asked me to do something about the rain... I could almost have wept... I did want her to come home safe and sound, but storms like these are sometimes very rare in my area, and I hadn't enjoyed a good downpour with the possibility of lightning in quite some time.

She was cold, wet, tired, and sore... so I can't blame her desire to be home and in a warm bed instead of being stuck in a downpour on the side of the road, forced to camp for one more night.

So my single last act of defiance before concentrating on the storm at hand, I decided to eat my grilled cheese sandwiches first. Having done that and not really having anything left to put this off, I turned my attention tot he storm at hand. I hadn't been feeling very well lately so I didn't want to overtax myself as this sometimes has detrimental impacts on my health and immune system. So I focused on the weather as it pertains to the highway and her route home to lighten up in these areas and to shed the water and flooding from her path.

She came home around midnight and said with some bravado, "What flooding? We were told there was 4 inches of water on the road in places and that roads were being closed." I looked at her and replied, "You asked that I do something about the rain and the flooding so you could come home... what were you expecting?"

I'm glad that she made it home, it was nice to have a warm body next to me while I slept again.
