After a couple of weeks of some very dissappointing/depressing news from those in the comics industry, it's nice to see that Ty Templeton remains as awesome as everAlso? After having dropped Ultimate Spidey a while back (the post-Ultimatum reboot confused me, so I decided not to deal with it) I am so totally picking this up. Here's hoping they ( Read more... )

Yeah, I could actually understand some of the outrage if it were in the main continuity. You get attached to and identify with a character and then they kill them off and bring in someone new, you can't help but have a little bit of irritation no matter who that someone is. (Hell, when the Bills inevitably leave Buffalo, I will have to hate wherever the team ends up on principle, and I know it's irrational - lol, football.) So I can get that level (not enough to warrant the bile, but I wouldn't be entirely bothered by people who took issue with it) but like you say, it's Ultimate. Peter Parker's still there, three times a month, we didn't lose him, we just get the opportunity for brand new stories with a new character who will bring a new dynamic. How is that not awesome?

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I was never really bothered much by what the Ultimate Universe did or didn't do. None of it was the main Marvel U, it was basically an entire universe "What If...?" where the writers could play around and try new things without disrupting the established canon of 616. It may not have started out that way, but that's what it was. I enjoyed the hell out of Ultimate Iron Man, but I would never want the main Iron Man's backstory to match it. Likewise I was pretty squicked by the Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver pairing, but I would never rant and rave about how terrible it was. It wasn't main canon, it didn't really matter. I could just avoid stories with those two and enjoy their characters in the main universe (such that I was able to, haha!).

Ultimately, I think fans (fans of anything will do this, but comic fans tend to be pretty loud) just like to complain. Complaining about things shows you know more! You're not a sheep! You're a true fan! While I realize how silly this is to say when I spend a lot of time complaining about things - I am a fan too XD - sometimes the nitpicky problems people have is just ridiculous. Besides, who am I to argue with killing off an established, white, spiderman-like hero and replacing him with a hero of color? XD

Actually, if I remember correctly, the original idea behind the Ultimate universe was that it would eventually replace 616 as the main universe. I'm glad they didn't end up going that route, but I'm not sorry they tried, since we did get some awesome stories (though admittedly some terrible ones too) that they wouldn't have done in 616.

You're right, though. If you just hear "they killed off spiderman and replaced him!" with no context, I think the knee-jerk reaction is going to be some anger at it. Context matters, people! And the worst deaths are the ones that don't get the big fanfare, as you said. DC's had a really bad habit of killing of hordes of heros off-panel in the last few years, which is the worst way to do it. Bleh.

I don't have muhc to add except to say that that page is wonderful. XD
