It Wouldn't Have Occured To Me If It Wasn't So Glaringly Obvious

I've been doing prenatal yoga nearly every day for a few months now, and I've noticed that in both of my videos, all of the pregnant women (and one unpregnant instructor) have wedding bands on. It's not even that subtle, either. They all have wide, shiny wedding bands that just can't be missed.

On other workout dvds - of which I have quite a collection - I had sort of noticed by accident that no one ever wears any jewelry, except maybe a Buddhist bracelet or necklace in the yoga ones. But the prenatal videos make such an obvious effort to show that these women are all married, it's sort of right there in my face.

In other places, too, I've noticed that pregnant women are always shown with wedding bands, like in the ads in my Parenting magazine and on the cover of my "What to Expect" guide.

And here I thought that we as a culture had moved past this need to pigeonhole wives and mothers as, esentially, one and the same?

yoga, pregnancy, exercise
