On the one hand, I have a story I'm working on that I'd like to get published someday, but on the other hand, this could push me forward. What do you think?
On the one hand, good impetus to get writing, and it'd probably be fun. And every word you write is practice/makes you better, in theory. On the other hand, it's time you wouldn't be working on your novel, I'm assuming. It's a tough call! I'm still debating it a little, myself.
It does sound like fun, but if you don't have an idea for an original story that can be done in 20K or so, one that you're comfortable posting online, then I'm not sure it's worth it. I guess it depends on how excited you are about your novel right now - if you love that story enough, I'd continue on with that and skip the big bang. But, if you're not in that mindset right now, and feel like a deadline would give you some good practice, then why not?

But I'm going to keep this in mind in case I want to try a short story next year.:)
