Emancipate: To free from bondage, oppression, or restraint; liberate

The corridor, or rather passage way, was only lit by a handful of flickering torches at rather too far apart intervals. It came off from the main corridor leading to the caves that housed the criminals that were far too dangerous to ever be set free, but the criminal held at the end of this passage way was the subject of more legends and scary bed time tales than all the other criminals added together. Mothers told their children to mind their manners, eat their dinner and go to sleep when they were told too or the Shadow would take them and use them in horrible and unthinkable ways. Children played at being Sir Marcus, subduing the Shadow and locking her away for all eternity, so long as his blood shall remain on his land. Unfortunately for everyone in the entire known world, the last of Sir Marcus’ blood was unconscious and being dragged behind a rather skeletal figure in deep midnight blue robes.

When the robed figure reached the end of the passage way and had dispelled all of the magical barriers preventing the Shadows’ release that it was able, the stick thin being cleared a square of the stone floor off and dumped the unconscious child onto it. After reaching into a pocket on its right hand side the creature pulled out a faintly glowing rod of dark crystal, chanted something in a stiff and harsh tongue and began drawing dark symbols in the air above the child. On the final note of the chant the symbols that had been drawn out coalesced and fell onto the unsuspecting body below. Nodding to itself, the skeletal figure returned the dark rod back to the pocket that it had come from and proceeded to draw out a gleaming silver-edged dagger, the hilt of which was adorned with many gems, the biggest being an oval of the same dark crystal that the rod was made of.

Throughout all of this, the imprisoned Shadow had been watching and listening. When she had recognised the ritual for what it was her face twisted into an obscene parody of a smile. Painfully thin, yet exquisitely beautiful, she got up and stood at the edge of her prison watching the final stages of the ritual that would liberate her from her intolerable imprisonment, deep blue eyes flickering over the form of the last her enemy’s’ bloodline.

Having noticed the motion behind the barrier, the figure sped up its movements and knelt less than a foot away from the still form of the child.

“O swift Mistress of Terror, Bringer of the Final Dark and Lady of Death, I, but a humble servant, do offer the death of this human, last of the line of Marcus, to you in order to free you to your place in the world,” the creature announced loudly and clearly, voice echoing off of the damp walls of the cave.

As the last word was said, it began a new chant full of sibilant hisses and guttural tones. The longer the chant went on, the higher pitched it became, and at its highest point the robed creature plunged the gem-encrusted dagger into the heart of the young child and removed it. Blood spurted out from the child’s chest, hit the barrier and pooled on the stone beneath the body. Whilst the blood flowed, the creature wiped the dagger clean on the hem of its robe. Once it was satisfied that the dagger was once again clean, it was returned to its previous place and the creature stepped to the left hand side of the cave, waiting for the final barrier to crumble and its’ Mistress to once again walk the earth.

Where the blood had hit the barrier you could see a web-like pattern spread out wards, whilst the edges touching the stone of the cave crumbled inwards. When the two met the barrier fell and the Shadow was once again un-bound and free to roam the land, continuing her millennia old hunt for revenge.

Freedom! At last, blessed freedom, thought the Shadow as she stalked out of the dark hole that had been her prison for the past five hundred years and over to the figure in midnight blue robes.

“Clear this mess up.” She ordered the figure, adding, “You know what else to do.”

“Yes Mistress. It shall be as you wish,” came the reply.

Nodding in acknowledgement, the Shadow fairly glided along the poorly lit passage way and out into freedom.

Despite the amount of time that had passed since she had last faced her opponent she could still feel him through the link they shared. The Shadow could feel his displeasure at her moving freely around the world again and she could feel his attempts to hide his mind from her, but it seemed that five centuries of not having to constantly watch his back had dulled his abilities.

It’ll be a few days, a week at most, before he can hide his mind from me with any certainty, she mused to herself as she waited in a shadowed alcove for the corridor to be clear enough for her to move on undetected. I’ll have to get close enough to him to track him when he moves on.

Dear little Brother, do you really think you can run from me and not get caught in the end? I always won when we were children, and nothing’s changed in the following years. I will catch you and take my rightful place as Queen and nothing you do will stop me. Hear me, nothing. Not even your life Liam.

With that, the recently emancipated Shadow began to plan her first act of revenge.

So, not what I was expecting to write, and rather creepier than I originally intended too. I hope you liked it though. As usual, please leave me a comment telling me what you think. If you think it's awful; ok but, not what you'd normally choose; you've found a mistake; anything! Please, leave me some feedback! [Author reserves the right to feed flames to the Shadow]

Also, could you tell me if you think this is rated correctly. I'm not quite sure what it should be, but I thought it's better to be safe than sorry.
