Fanmix - An Ordinary Hero - spring_with_xan

May 24, 2008 23:26

Sorry for this being so late in the day, I've had family and general RL interference all day *sigh*

Before I get into the mix, let me just say that this is the first mix that I've ever posted. Heck it's the only mix that I've gone more than "ooh, that song fits X *adds to playlist*" at. Also, there's nothing about/from the comics in this mix as I haven't caught up on them properly yet, so there are only mentions of s1-7 things in here.

1. Fight the Good Fight - Triumph [lyrics]
I do my best I do my part
Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart
---
Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day

This is pure Xander right down to his core. He's got no super powers, no extra supernatural knowledge or training; there's nothing out of the ordinary about him, yet despite that, he's always there, always ready to back Buffy up no matter what the demon du jour is. From the moment he found out about vampires he's brought his unique look on life and unending loyalty to the fight and fought to save the world, even though there are stronger, faster, more powerful people available.

2. My Best Friend - Weezer [lyrics]
There is no other one who can take your place
I feel happy inside when I see your face
I hope you believe me
'Cause I speak sincerely

This song is about the Xander & Willow friendship that we see grow, mutate and evolve throughout the series, but it fits in mostly during seasons 1 to 3.

3. Home - Three Days Grace [lyrics]>
No matter how hard I try
You're never satisfied
This is not a home
I think I'm better off alone

This strikes me as a season 1 to 3 song that highlights how Xander wants to leave but just can't, for many reasons (being a minor, having no/very little money etc.), so instead he spends as much time as he can at Willows'/Buffys'/the library researching the newest baddy etc. He builds a home from the people he's with not from the place that he lives, so no matter where he is, so long as he's got one of his friends with him, he's home.

4. I Want To Be Loved - Bon Jovi [lyrics]*
I can forgive you, but I won't relive you
I ain't the same scared kid I used to be

I'm gonna live
I'm gonna survive
Don't want the world to pass me by
I'm gonna dream
I ain't gonna die

To me, this is a mostly season 4 Xander song. He's upset and annoyed that he's being sidelined in favour of shiny new college-related things in Buffy and Willows' lives, but it shows that he's still determined to live his life how he wants to. Being a scooby is a large part of his life, but it's not the only thing to it and he wants more from life. Especially as you never know just how long you've got left when you're battling the hordes from hell.

It also feels like a comment back to his parents about how he's not gonna be like them, he's gonna be successful and a good man.

5. I Hate You - The Londogs [no lyric link available]

Overall, this is for all those moments when Xander's taken for granted by Cordelia or Anya in relationship-related ways and by Willow and Buffy etc. in general life related ways. Yes, he loves them, but sometimes dammit, he really wants to be recognised for himself and for the things he can or can't do, not for being Anyas' boyfriend or Buffys' friend.

6. Streets of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen [lyrics]
I was bruised and battered and I couldn't tell
What I felt
I was unrecognisable to myself
I saw my reflection in a window I didn't know
My own face

The feeling of desolation and lonliness that runs through this song is what drew me in, rather than the actual lyrics. It makes me think of just after Xander's staked Jesse as well as just after he left Anya at the alter. An important event in his life has just happened (or not, as the case may be) and Xan's not too sure how to deal with it properly.

7. I'll Always Be Right There - Michelle Branch [lyrics]
And I'll be there through the good times
and the bad
And we'll be there for each other
Cause you're the best friend I've ever had

Mostly, this is Xander and Willows' friendship through the ages, but it also fits well with everyone who's become a friend to Xander by the end of the series.

8. My Hero - Foo Fighters [lyrics]
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary

This is how Buffy sees Xander, especially in season 7. He's ordinary, yet he fights alongside her, and that amazes her and makes him a hero in her eyes.

9. Could We Start Again, Please? - Jesus Christ Superstar OST [lyrics]
So could we start again please?
Could we start again please?

This is for when Xander and Anya sorta, kinda, but not properly, get back together again in season 7.

10. All That I've Got - The Used [lyrics]
So deep that it didn't even bleed and catch me
So deep that I didn't even scream fuck me
I'll be just fine
Pretending I'm not

Post Chosen. The total loss of Sunnydale along with everything and everyone that went down with it hasn't quite hit him yet as he's helping everyone else deal, but everyone (well, the ones who don't know him as well as the core scoobies) expects him to break down any second.

BONUS TRACK. I'll Never Tell - Xander & Anya*
How could this not be on here?!
