Chapter VII : Blend and Balance

I made my way past shelves of books with a guitar strapped to my back, heading to the back of the local library with Min. The smell of paper and books filled my nostrils and my ears enjoyed the rare quite moment they were getting at the moment. Actually now that I think about it my ears had been getting quite a bit of quite these past few days, usually they would go for weeks without a quiet moment (I usually like to sleep with music playing) but this past week not only have I gone without anything playing while I sleeping but I’d also spent quite a few waking hours in silence. The most note worthy had been a yesterday morning when my wings had gone in. Me and Min had spent a good half hour sitting together hugging each other. I still blush thinking about it.

The next morning George, Izzy, and Mark were told that I had a bad stomach ache, we decided that it was probably going to be a lot easier to break it to them if I actually had the wings to show them, which wouldn’t be there for another 28 days. Then I moved into my new room, it’s quite spacious and quite empty too. I have a bed, a desk, a guitar and a few boxes of random stuff (which mostly consisted of school stuff, cook books and a collection of CD’s). It looks like a desert compared to the rest of the house.

Well anyway, getting back to the preset, Junsu’s supposed to be meeting us here so that we can work on that music assignment, which brings me to another train of though. Why on Earth did I agree when we decided that a library was a good place to meet to compose music? I swear this was probably Su’s suggestion, because it was defiantly crazy enough for it. I spotted the overly hyper teen waving at us from the back of the library. He was sitting at some worn chairs patiently waiting for us, sort of. It was difficult to put my finger on but somehow I don’t think Junsu will ever fit my definition on patient.

Min and I made our way to the boy and sat down.

“Can someone remind me why we’re meeting at a library to compose music,” I asked when we settled since the silence around here was starting to get awfully suffocating.

“Because this is the only place I know how to get to?” responded Junsu (I knew it, it had been his idea).

“Right, so how are we going to make music when we can’t even make noise?”

“Jae, I’m not sure how many times you’ve been to the library but we can head into the community center behind, there’s tables and a small lounge like place there,” Min said.

“There’s a community center attached to this place?”

“Yes, how long have you been living here?!”

“Umm some four, five years…”

“And you still didn’t know that there was a community center attached to your own local library?”

“Hey, I’m not a library person okay.”

Both Min and Su were now trying to hold in laughter as I glared at them, which really only made them laugh more.

“Can we get moving now, please?”

“Sure thing there,” Min replied once he had stopped holding his stomach. “Follow me.” With that he got up and lead the way to the back of the library, where we made our way through some scanner and a door to the back of the library. We walked through a hall which opened to a small lounge area with a couple of leather sofas and chairs. There were also some café style tables and chairs scattered around the space. There wasn’t all too many people here, mostly teenagers that had come to socialise with friends. They were loud enough to warn us making noise back here too.

There were was a wall of windows to one wall that showed a view of the back of the community center. There were more of the café style furniture out there but the only thing that occupied them was snow (yes, were in Canada here, it snows here in the last week of November, actually it usually snows even earlier some years, this time we’re blessed with a nice mild winter though). The furniture was all situated in a small paved semicircle, and I could have bet that it would have been quite nice out there in the spring or summer. There were also some trees that surrounded the semicircle and a couple of paths that lead into what seemed like a mini forest behind the building. My interest was piqued, I was coming here again to explore. Although I would probably have to wait until spring, when the weather warmed up a bit more.

We walked over to one of the tables towards the corner, near the window, and Min pulled out his laptop from his bag. “So shall we get started?”

“Who kept the stuff from class?” asked Su.

“I have them, one moment,” I replied as I went hunting through my own bag for the crumpled sheets of staff paper that contained scribbles of  lyrics and roughly noted music.

“Right, so how are we gonna do this again?” Su asked.

“You ever heard of a program called Finale? It’ll let us enter in the notation and play back what we wrote. I have it on my laptop. Plus, Jae  brought his guitar along so we’ll be fine.”

“Didn’t the teacher say we were entering this in on the Finale at school anyway?”

“Yep, we’re just getting a head start because we decided to write an actual song not half of one so we’ve got more to do.”

“All right, let’s get going then. Well, I guess I should throw this in now, I kinda came up with some lyrics last night ‘cause inspiration struck and I was bored.”

“Let’s hear?”

“Whenever you look in my eyes,
I want to show you my love
I make up my mind to make your dreams come true.
Nobody can stop me from saying I love you.”

He sang in a clear voice and yet again I wondered how he had ended up on drums with a talent like that. “Sounds good but the third line sounds kind of awkward you should shorten it a bit.”

“I tried shortening it actually but it just ended up sounding weird.”

“’I decided to make your dreams come true.’ Is that any better?” Min finally piped in.

“Perfect!” Su and I exclaimed in unison (now that was weird, I’m in unison with Su, where’s the apocalypse?).

*******************

My hands are shaking.

Shit.

Why do I have to have the worst nervous reflex on the planet when it comes to playing piano. I’m pretty sure anything would be better than trying to play piano when your fingers are shaking. I looked over at Jae on his acoustic and Junsu banging away at the drums and see them comfortable as ever, like we weren’t just going to perform something we’d spent some 2 weeks working on. I sighed and focused back on the keys.

The teacher nodded and I looked over to Junsu.

Tap, tap, tap, tap.

And with that we were off music flowing through my veins I poured over the piano as I played trying desperately to steady my shaking fingers. It sort of worked, at least the shaking subsidised. The lyrics came and Jae started us off with the first verse. I still wonder why he hasn’t been scouted by an agency yet. Actually the same could be said to Junsu as well. The two have talent that would be worthy of a world stage. Jae with his soft calming voice that fits every genre out there, he’s still a bit rough around the edges, gets off tune every once in a while but with a bit of training and a couple more years he would be a genius, actually scratch that he already is.

The melody switches to Junsu, his voice is completely different, it carries this sort of power that I would never have imagined would come out of a guy with his cute, childish personality. If he decided he could probably override both me and Jae put together with piano and all. He makes even the most simple lines sound epic. His rough edge is controlling his voice, as much as that power is amazing it’s not a good thing to have the harmony overriding the melody. Junsu needs to refine the control of his vocals and refine his ability to listen then blend and balance with the people around him. He’s ready pretty good it’s more that he needs a bit more practice. Still he has no claim at being an armature, no claim what so ever.

The melody bounces back to Jae, and he fills his part, we echo him once or twice and then it’s my turn. I take over the melody and sing. I can’t tell what’s doing, it’s all a blur, the keys, the notes even the words. All that’s left is emotion and so I pour it all out, sweet longing, hardened determination, and love.

The chorus comes around I start to come around to myself again. I realise how squeaky my voice is and how it’s way too high in comparison to the other two, my nerves are throwing me off again. My fingers keep pushing the keys and I try to blend in with the other two, to make my voice indistinguishable between the other sounds because with unison the key is to not be heard. If the audience hears you it means there’s something off. I wonder if I succeeded. It’s so easy to tell when you’re the listener but when you’re the one singing it’s so much more challenging to actually tell whether or not you are in balance. Especially when you have two things to balance, an instrument and a voice.

Here comes the call and response verse. Jaejoong, Junsu, all, Junsu, echo. I knew giving Junsu the response was a good idea, he does it like a pro, makes the line stand and say ‘here’s what I have to say and I mean it’. I take my lines and sing again, I try to match him, it’s practically impossible. The other two join and harmonise, it seems to me like their adjusting their voice slightly to match my pitch, that is what you call naturals.

Jae’s lines, he sings like he’s standing in front of the girl.

My lines, and I poor my soul into them, I wonder if I matched Jae. I would be on my 9th cloud if I did. We’re together again, then Junsu gets line, and me and Jae echo, we balance perfectly somehow. Jae gets his final solo lines.

Then we’re together… and we finish.

We get a loud round of applause from the class. Junsu looks like he’s bouncing off the walls with pride at the performance and Jae has a smirk plastered on his face a glint in his eyes that I’ve ever seen before. I find myself smiling along with them as we say a quite thank you and go back to our spectator seats. I look over and see my teacher smiling as she writes something down on a scarp piece of paper.

The three of us patiently watched the rest of the performances, most were very simple, some not even properly prepared, there were a couple of duets that were quite descent but Jaejoong and Junsu were unmatched and I think the rest of the class knows it too. Time made its rounds and soon it was time to pack up. We were given five minutes which was really 4 more then the three of us needed, I mean it wasn’t like me and Junsu had anything to pack up in the first place and Jae just had to stick his guitar in its bag so we were left standing by the door talking waiting for the bell to release us from the prison that school can feel like sometimes.

“Changmin, Jae and Junsu can I talk to you for a moment,” the teacher call to us (Jae insist that absolutely everyone call him Jae for some strange reason that I will never understand) and we headed over wondering what she wanted from us. Usually when she called up people like this it was about something to do with the school concert band and what not, so we weren’t sure quite what to expect since none of us is actually in the concert band considering we don’t really play concert instruments.

“I want to start by congratulating you on that wonderful performance,” and there she goes. “You are all extremely talented individuals and I’m so glad to have you in my class. I don’t know how much you saw of the your classmate’s expressions but let me inform you that their jaws were on the floor as you performed. Now, I’m sure you’ve all heard of the Christmas concert coming up. One of our main performer’s dropped out because she broke her hand, poor thing, and you see she’s a pianist so it is quite impossible for her to play so I was wondering if you could preform the song you just sang for the concert? I realise the piece is not exactly Christmas themed but I think the feel of the song will compliment the mood quite well.”

We all looked at each other. There was no point in asking Junsu’s opinion, the plain “Hell YES!” was written in bold, obnoxious letters right across his forehead and his shining eyes. Jae was also smiling and nodding at me like the little kid he was, so who was I to ruin their fun.

“Sure, we can do it, I don’t see why not.”

The other two absolutely beamed and I really do wonder how it is that I wound up as the youngest of the group.
