'Twas off to the local theatre tonight to see a farce written in the 70's by Mike Harding (folk singer/comedian/playwright) called "Fur Hat and No Knickers".
Set in an unspecified Northern town in the 70's it concerns a working class family whose daughter is marrying the son of a "we've made it up the social ladder" family.
Scene 1 is the day before the wedding and the Stag night.
Scene 2 is the Wedding Day itself.

From the start it promised well with the music and setting being spot on for the times. The references to hobbies/clothing /likes and dislikes were absolutely correct for the year and incredibly funny because of it (the "posh" mother's references to Marks and Spencer underwear and Capo di Monte ornaments in particular)
The format included each character addressing themselves to the audience and doing a potted biography - an effective technique of dimming the rest of the stage lights and putting a spot on the character speaking made this work really well.

Absolutely no disappointments at all with the whole play. The cast nailed it - no hesitations, no missed cues, no improbable characterisation. Everything was performed excellently.
Of course the characters were caricatures and stereotypes but they were meant to be.
It had the audience rocking with laughter all the way through and we couldnt believe how quickly it was all over. (I was giggling nearly all the time myself and I so often dont find these things that funny.)
Incidentally I was amused to find in the stag night scene where a few lines were sung of various "Rugby" songs, that I knew all the words of all the verses that they WERENT singing - signs of a mis spent life!!!
So definitely a gold star for this one. Acting/production/costume/timing/business all perfect.
So far this season, all the plays have been entertaining and well worth the money.

On Sunday m'friend and I are going to the Municipal Hall to hear Manchester Camerata playing "The 4 Seasons" by Vivaldi.
And tonight while I was at the local theatre I booked myself a seat for "Coppelia" when the Moscow State Ballet company come back in March. So not only I am going to be enjoying a mixture of entertainments, but I am also fulfilling an Imbolc promise to myself to have the courage to go to a performance of something on my own. Go me!!!
(Oddly, although I have been abroad on holiday on my own, I have never been to the theatre/cinema or swimming alone - until now!)
Next thing is to go to Manchester alone on the free bus and see what's on at the theatres etc there - the plan for next month.
